OK, we do this every year: run the gauntlet of body odor and halitosis that is the Electronic Entertainment Expo for three solid days of earsplitting noise, huge crowds and games that may or may not see the light of day in the next two years. Then we are expected to sum it with a 'Best Of' post after it's all over. So bear with us:
Best of Show - Dragon Age (BioWare)
We were most impressed (even at this early stage) with Dragon Age. This is the first game we have ever seen that the end result looks better than the concept artwork. BioWare has outdone themselves blending everything good about Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights and Knights of the Old Republic into this stunning new title. This was flat out, the best thing we saw at all of E3. While the completed product is still far off, AT is very excited to play it once it is done.
Best PC Title - The Movies (Lionhead Studios)
The Movies will suck more productivity from people's lives than any other title so far. The ability to manage a studio, produce and manage every aspect of a movie, then upload the finished product to the web for people to watch and comment on, has us eagerly anticipating the player created masterpieces we will witness when the game finally hits retail.
Best PC Title Runner-up - F.E.A.R. (Monolith)
E3 2004 was a show of sequels and as such, we didn't find it terribly exciting. Hell, Half-Life 2 is still the talk of the show, and seeing how that hasn't changed from last year, we're kind of itching for some unique, new franchises to whet our appetites for 2005. One such franchise is Monolith's amazing new shooter game, F.E.A.R.. Monolith has a proven track record when it comes to developing immersive and highly playable PC shooters, and when you combine that with the top-of-the-line technology that's powering the game it's easy to figure out why we're so excited about F.E.A.R..
Best Console Title - Halo 2 (Bungie)
Bungie is one of those truly remarkable design teams that rarely does anything wrong. They go to great lengths to ensure that their products are very close to superb and done with the utmost attention to detail. Believe us when we say, folks, that all that becomes very evident when you get to spend some hands-on time with Halo 2. Come November Xbox gamers will be going nuts over this one.
On a side note, one other game that deserves a mention here is GTA: San Andreas, but Rockstar didn't have a strong presence at this year's E3, so we opted for Halo 2 instead.
Best Hardware - PSP (Sony)
Gimme!
Best Hardware Runner-up - Video Array (Alienware)
Here's a quick explanation of this technology for those of you not in the know. Nothing truly revolutionary, but it's damn sweet and we want it!
Video Array, Alienware's exclusive patent-pending innovation, enables two high-performance PCI-Express video cards, (exact cards from the same manufacturer) to process graphics commands in parallel, thus significantly increasing the graphics performance. It includes proprietary software and hardware, including a video merger hub which ultimately merges the individual signals into one image.
Can you say 3dfx SLI technology?

Oh, no. I didn't intended to blast you guys. It's just that I was expecting the same quality of coverage as last year's. Now that I know the facts I don't mind it at all. I know how hard it is for one guy to cover 600+ games in 3 days, so I appreciate all the efforts on Vince's part. That being said, I'm sure the coverage next year (E3 2005) will be much, much better. Wish you good luck here, guys :) P.S. What is SNAFU? (I know I can search for it on the web, but I'm too lazy for such a task)

No really, I’ve got to admit the quality of your E3 coverage has – over the year – gone down a bit. First there's not such thing as perfect. Okay? Next, except the E3 hands-on previews (which I'm sure you guys put a lot of effort into), there was nothing much worth mentioning. Smash my face in, but I don’t suppose you had anything exclusive, or a mouthful of videos, or new polls every 12 hours. Worst yet, I personally missed the photos you took last year (of AT’s staff and the company booths). No offense here but I guess you were either short of ideas this year (something to do with 2lions being a dad) or you went for a more corporate look. All this spoils the fun a bit, don’t you think? Coming back to the wrap-up, I know you guys were dead tired after the event, but I’d have loved a couple of more pages of the wrap-up. Ideas: Best screenshot, best video, best booth babe, best news bit, best reader comment … etc. etc. (Somebody please stop me here). Of course these are all my thoughts – you might disagree with me, but in light of the coverage last year, I was expecting something much, much better. Not that it will stop me from visiting your site. You guys rock (and I can’t help laughing at all your ‘Butter Boy’ jokes). The best I can do is hope that you’ll put up even better show come ‘05.

Yeah, I kind of had very few ideas at the show this year - SEEING HOW I WASN'T FUCKING THERE!! Jeezus... wait, what did I just write, and who the hell are you? I'm a parent now; the condition has physically changed me so much that I can't see what I'm typing from my grotesquelly enlarged forehead. Seriously, dude, lay off your nick :)

Oh and about the exclusive stuff... Are you fucking positively insane?! OK, granted, you don't have a clue how things work behind the scenes, but let's just say I have a better chance of frenching Britney Spears than I do of getting an exclusive while IGN, Gamespot and Gamespy are lubing the publishers... It would also help if I was physically present at the show, too...

It would also help if I was physically present at the show, too... Of couse it would. I thought you were off to E3, what happened? Mornin' --> http://www.actiontrip.com/archive.phtml?day=05_07_ I remember how you covered the E3 last year: http://www.actiontrip.com/features/e32003.phtml http://www.actiontrip.com/features/e3preshow.phtml Now I may sound like Shrek, but really there are more 500,000 people who don't/can't go to E3. There's so much to see, so a dozen or two random pics of the event/pre-event are the next best thing after being there. Needless to say, I was diappointed when they were not there. We could all use a little change. The coverage at IGN, GameSpy and GameSpot is exactly the same (agree it's got something to do with lubing), but I missed the coverage of B-class developers (Blitzkrieg 2, Chicago 1930, Earth 2160, Euro 2004, Fire Department 2, Ground Control 2, The Fall: Last Days of Gaia etc). Don't tell me they were not present. Now that would have been exclusive, since almost all the sites were having a threesome with Half-Life 2, Halo 2 and Battlefield 2. I'm sure things will be better (or personal, if you will) next year when your ass will (literally) be on the show-floor along with the rest of the crew. And oh, about the nick: I was initially planning to use 'Bibbity' as a nick, but that didn't work, so had to stick with this one. In case you think of a new nick for me, just fire me an email :)

| One more thing ... I guess I know a bit about behind the scenes work. I aspire to be a game developer one day (stop laughing!). No, really I do! :) | ||

Hey, don't blast 2Lions and Moe. The fact is that we had less manpower there than we did last year (by 2 people - I was unable to make it, and 2Lions had his little SNAFU), and personally, I think Moe did a fantastic job for us. All that info was gathered, written up and organized by ONE MAN, and I think Vince deserves full props for that. That being said, Vince is only one man, and an event of the scale of E3 demands more than one person to fully cover every little foible, and with any luck, our 2005 coverage will be MUCH more comprehensive, with the happy reunion of Six, Moe and 2Lions (and who knows who else?) to bring you every little thing possible.
