Ghost Recon 3 Hands-On PreviewE3 2005 Coverage » Ghost Recon 3 Hands-On Preview
May 20, 2005
ActionTrip Editors

I am not a fan of the Ghost Recon series. In fact, I hate most Tom Clancy games, and I hate Tom Clancy because he's killing literature. Ghost Recon 3 had much the same effect on me.

The preview started out with a picture of some soldier and talking about all the neat stuff that you'll get to wear as a soldier. You'll have trendy boots, a nice shirt, and some kneepads for the barracks. You even have a computer in your head because you're probably incapable of thinking on your own. So it's good that that is there.

Ghost Recon 3 takes place in Mexico City because all non-white people are evil. I have no idea why, but it seems like the damn Mexicans are always doing evil things like providing farm labor that keeps our grocery stores full of food, giving us nice food, and providing a lovely and vibrant culture to take part in. I'm from New Mexico, and I know first-hand how awful these things can be. If I counted the number of times I saw a Mexican do something wrong, it would be roughly on par with the number of times I saw any member of any other race do something wrong, but because they're not Americans, you're going to have to stroll on down to Mexico City and kill a whole lot of them.

Regardless, the display looks interesting too in that it provides a whole lot of neat pictures to stare at. I'm not really sure what they do. Some of the time you follow behind your soldier in "cover mode" and other times you go into a first person mode that has a camera shot in the left-hand corner that does something, and an occasional camera in the right-hand corner that does some stuff too when there's news or something that you need to hear about on the battlefield. When you go into shooting mode, it looks like your view will stay put at least some of the time and your crosshair will be what moves around, as opposed to staying in the center of the screen. This probably makes sense as you would actually move the gun around in your hands rather than turning your entire body to shoot someone. That's a good system, I just hope that you aren't cemented in place while this is happening, that is just a hair too arcade shooter for me. There was a big explosion at one point, and then everyone started screaming about how the president was dead, and that we had a VIP situation on our hands, and to start killing more people. Even later there was a scene with a tank, and we got to call in helicopters to come deal with it and blow its ass away, which it did, and that was sort of neat too.

The game does look very pretty though. And that's nice. It shows off the latest in next gen graphics, and it looks like the Xbox 360 will be shelling out some serious eye candy for us all to gaze upon and awe at for hours on end. Then again, all of the next gen consoles are going to blow us away with how pretty they make everything look.

I've seen two different or at least semi-different trailers for Ghost Recon 3. And all I can tell you is that Mexico City is involved, it takes place in the future, and you shoot a lot of people.

It looks like it will bring more of the gameplay that fans have come to enjoy from the previous two games (or just one game if you're a PC fan), but it will be prettier. There is really not much here yet apart from pretty pictures; maybe we'll get more information later on down the road.

Regarding the preview of Ghost Recon 3: many of us don't care that you think Tom Clancy is killing literature -we're interested about the video game. Many of us don't care that you don't like these games - some may wonder why you were given this assignment. Many of us, having read Tom Clancy's books, and played games with non-white protagonists such as Ding Chavez, don't quite get your attempt to paint Clancy and his games with a racist/fascist brush. If you wanted to sound informative and succint, you failed. If you wanted to sound patronising, condescending, and superior, mission accomplished. That this piece of diatribe was approved to be the official word of Actiontrip on Ghost recon 3 has just gotten Action Trip taken off my favorites list.

Nice flame on Tom Clancy games. Classic.

Whew. What *he* said.

However, having (almost) said all that...is it me, or does this game look like "Ghost Recon 2: The Console Abortion", but in Mexico City? I mean, I thought the whole reason that UbiSoft pulled the plug on the second one (for PC) was because it was a donkey-sucking console port that shared NOTHING with the original "Ghost Recon" outside of the bloody name. This thing (GR3) looks like the exact same thing I'd watched in dozens of trailers for GR2!

Where's the tactics? Where's the hours of creeping/stealthing (almost) around to jockey for strategic position to gain the upper hand on the bad guys? And what the FUCK is it with that floaty damned reticule (in the trailer)?! I got seasick just watching that guy trying to sight in on an enemy for ten seconds!

Whatever. I'll just reinstall my copy of the original (now FIVE-year-old) game and enjoy a *true* military action/strategy game, dated graphics be-damned.

Meh.

Yours Always,
Fester
