I know that the victors get to write the history but honestly this whole Patriots vs Empire stuff is such a ridiculously simplistic way of looking at the War of Independence.
An empire established some colonies that eventually became too wealthy, extensive, and far-flung to continue ruling over without unsustainably massive and on-going expenditure of effort. So, the colonies inevitably ended up winning their independence.
It's a common story, one that's been repeated many times in recorded history.
Of course, for the purposes of a video-game's narrative, the telling of that story is gonna get hammed up a bit. Pretty much a given. It has to entertain, afterall.
