BioShock 2 System Requirements & DRM
Filed under: BIOSHOCK 2, 2K GAMES, VALVE, STEAM

Valve already announced that the upcoming shooter BioShock 2 will be available through its digital distribution service, Steam. Those who pre-order the game will save 10% off the regular price and receive a free copy of Bioshock to boot. The game will feature DRM security. If you buy the game via Steam, you'll have to be logged in to Valve's service, wait for BioShock 2 to unlock, wait for SecuRom activation (and install limits too, probably), then log in to Games For Windows Live once the game has loaded, and then use it exclusively for multiplayer (aaaaarggh!).

Here are the specs for BioShock 2:

System Requirements:

Minimum:

  • OS: Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7
  • Processor: AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3800+ 2.4Ghz or better, Intel Pentium 4 530 3.0Ghz Processor or better
  • Memory: 2GB
  • Graphics: NVIDIA 7800GT 256MB graphics card or better, ATI Radeon X1900 256MB graphics card or better
  • DirectX: DirectX 9.0c
  • Hard Drive: 11GB
  • Sound: 100% DirectX 9.0C compliant sound card or onboard sound

Recommended:

  • Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ Dual Core 2.60Ghz, Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 Dual Core 2.13Ghz
  • Memory: 3GB
  • Graphics: NVIDIA 8800GT 512MB graphics card or better, ATI Radeon HD4830 512MB graphics card or better

    Other Requirements & DRM:

  • Initial installation requires one-time internet connection; Ability to save game, earn achievements, receive title updates and online play requires log-in to Games for Windows LIVE; software installations required including Microsoft Visual C++2008 Runtime Libraries, Games for Windows LIVE client, Games for Windows LIVE Client Patch, Sony DADC SecuROM, Microsoft DirectX.

Thanks, VE3D.

Man, even if I were to buy it, I would be forced to resort to piracy.

DRM is a bitch, ain't it?
Un Om Bun [STAFF] Jan 20 2010, 03:06 am EST
Did they just say "avoid this game, you don't need these kinds of headaches" ?
Vader [STAFF] Jan 20 2010, 03:07 am EST
Apparently.
Piccy Jan 20 2010, 03:09 am EST
So, I have to be connected to the internet and logged into some online serve that I dont want to be a member of just so I can save a local single player game?

Barzenak42 Jan 20 2010, 06:17 am EST
Wow..pass on all that crap. Pass for me on Bioshock 2
thestewieman Jan 20 2010, 06:17 am EST
consoles are far worse DRM wise, my pc aint tracking how many seconds i play their crappy game...

if i wanted them to know they should pay me instead of people paying for xbox live, where u pay to be anally probed every second of your playtime.
Microsofts ANAL PROBE NOW 100% EXCLUSIVE TO XBOX LIVE GOLD.
Barzenak42 Jan 20 2010, 06:19 am EST
Uhh..steam games track your time in game and who cares how long you play a game . Rather have that then all the drm stuff added and on top of each other....total pass on the pc version of Bioshock 2..I had problems with the drm on Bioshock ...

so what's the price of a blank dvd these days ?
run_like_snot Jan 20 2010, 09:06 am EST
A blank DVD is 40 New Zealand cents! A local save game on the other hand costs 50 dollars a month in internet fees!

Um... you know I don't really see a problem with this. Doesn't look like there's an install limit... I'm just going to buy it on Steam.

"Ability to save game"

multi-player games don't ask for an internet connection to play LAN and this fucker wants internet for single-player ?
Terminator Jan 20 2010, 02:41 pm EST
quote: "Ability to save game, earn achievements, receive title updates and online play requires log-in to Games for Windows LIVE"

You have to be connected to the internet to SAVE your game!? What a bunch of DRM bullshit! They wonder why people are always switching to console gaming? Crap like this is one reason!
KeepSmilin Jan 20 2010, 08:32 pm EST
Skip.

It's like they think we should be honored to glimpse the greatness that is their game. Fuck that. Got enough games coming out on the first quarter. I dont have to bend over and wait for them to shove a pineapple up my ass while shouting "Thank you sir! May i have another sir!"
mmacarthur Jan 21 2010, 12:06 am EST
This is standard affair for WIndows Live titles its no big deal you bitches just like whinging if you don't want to buy it fair enough but don't pirate it by doing that your just stealing other peoples hard work.
Superastic: Aw man! Now I have to "whinge" and pirate it. Hope yo…
Terminator: I haven't pirated a game yet, I won't start with Bios…
Superastic: This seems like a perfect time to start.
