Bungie Fires Composer Martin O'Donnell

Marty O'Donnell, composer well known for the music in the Halo and Myth series, was fired by Bungie's Board of Directors last week.

O'Donnell also worked on the score for Bungie's upcoming sci-fi shooter, Destiny.

Bungie has only offered the following statement on the situation, which naturally, does not include an explanation.

For more than a decade, Marty O'Donnell filled our worlds with unforgettable sounds and soundtracks, and left an indelible mark on our fans. Today, as friends, we say goodbye. We know that wherever his journey takes him, he will always have a bright and hopeful future.

We wish him luck in all his future endeavors.

They probably milked this mans talent as far as they could. Now he was "useless" to them, after making $$$ off him they throw him to the curb!
RenegadeCZ: That makes no sense. If you have a good composer on h…

y u do dis? :(

Heh, I haven't played any Halo games (Now I have an Xbox, so maybe I could get some for cheap. Suggestions?), so I could only benefit from that. Someone could hire him for something that actually comes to PC.

I can't help but wonder if this indicates internal dissatisfaction with how Destiny's development is coming along; Bungie is under a lot of pressure to succeed with Destiny and prove that they haven't just been the beneficiary of Microsoft's mass-marketing power for the last 10 years. The money-grubbing slave-drivers at Activision won't be happy with anything less than a game that sells just as well as the Halos.

The early draft of the score, O'Donnell explained, was largely written without any idea of what the game looked or played like. When he was finished, he jokingly said, "I dumped 50 minutes of music on [the development team and said 'Deal with that. Make a game as good as that."

Hmm...

@ActionTrip You posted a picture of Neil Davidge, the composer for Halo 4's soundtrack. That's not Marty.

@Cheddar The rumour I heard is that it was a contract rate dispute, and Bungie decided to nix him so they could get someone cheaper without the drama.
  Cheddar: Makes sense.

O'Donnell did great work on the Halo games. Bungie is crazy to terminate him....

So, Bungie now made two decisions I don't like. They've let O'Donnell go and they are developing a MMO shooter.

Hey, what about a new Myth game? No. You're so right Bungie. A MMO shooter. That's so much better. I can hardly fucking wait. There are so few of those about.
Juxtapose: Yeah, I'm also not interested in Destiny at all.
