Deux Ex Boss Battles Were Outsourced

Word has reached us that Eidos Montreal outsourced the boss fights in their game Deus Ex: Human Revolution to Grip Entertainment. The boss fights in the game were deemed unbalanced and, well, a bit clumsy, especially for gamers (such as myself) who spend most of their play time investing into passive, stealth-based augmentations, instead of more aggressive skills designed for combat. Either way, the battles weren't perfect.

Grip Entertainment president Paul Kruszewski confessed that he was given the project, but it was his first contact with the Deus Ex series."Full confession: I'm a shooter guy," he admits. "I was coming into this not knowing a lot about the Deus Ex world. The guys at Eidos gave us the design, gave us the engine…and we gave them back that experience."

"Balancing that was brutally hard. I've been building technology for 20 years... and it's one of the cleanest, best pieces of technology I've ever built."

There you have it. Well, granted, the boss battles were unbalanced somewhat, but in all fairness, this wasn't too much of a setback and it didn't ruin the experience for us.

Ruined my experience. If I give Deus Ex another playthrough, I'll cheat past the bosses. Horrible, horrible bosses. Didn't fit at all. 0/5. Probably top 3 worst bosses of all time. Maybe even the worst.

The other 2 major annoyances were:

You get too many augs by the end of the game. I maxed almost all. First game (DX 1) had a lot more variety with different augs per slot and skill points.

Hacking got boring fast and the way it was constantly used in the game needs an overhaul. Also, the cursor on a PC were also very imprecise, so the game often detected "auto-hack" instead of regular hack.

Outsourced !?! No wonder they felt out of place. For a game that flaunts 'NO KILL' approach you still had to KILL the bosses.

A stupid decision on Eidos Montreal's part for outsourcing AND letting it through to the final product.

Sure, the boss battles weren't anywhere near as satisfying as say SmashTV.
But still when you add up the great elements like user interface, graphics, sound, a well paced story this game still deserves a 98+.
  im_stardust: 98+ ? why not give it a perfect 10 already. What a great.......
EricHalfBee: 98+? So that's totally perfect or 1% away? I can't see it.

To be honest those factors

- shitty boss fights
- to many aug making the choice of path meaningless
- AND THE SHITTY ENDING

all make dues ex fail as a game of the year sure its alot better than many games but hect after playing it i started up my copys of dues ex and the invisible and to be honest i found dues ex to still be alot more engaging and to be honest the end choice in invisible war felt alot more engaging and meaningful.

Wow so much bitterness. I guess a game with a gripping story is far to advanced for the little kids. Keep playing COD you little console freaks.

Deus Ex 3 has many, many flaws. But still, I enjoyed the game and I would gladly play another just like it. End of story.

i agree on the Sucky Ending!! WTF was up with that!!!
im_stardust [mail] Sep 20 2011, 01:27 pm EDT
Not really, the ending and the story were above average for a video game.

People here just don't fucking get it.

For the first time ever, I agree with stardust. I really liked the ending. You had four options how to end it, and each was covering a valid view on humanity, human rights and boundaries of our knowledge. Those videos gave contemplation rarely seen in today's games. These endings were exactly how I think the whole game should have been. A story of whether it is right or not to alter God's creation. I'm quite sure that our society will once come to this point, as we are getting closer to it every second. We can already create artificial, yet very clumsy hands, eye-like cameras with something about 10x10 resolution. But there is more stuff to come...

I, for one, agreed the most with the "suicide" ending and the "Sarif's" ending. Either that one person has not the right to decide on a matter this important, or that we should be allowed grasp outside our reach. Maybe it will destroy us sometimes, but then it will not bother us anyway.

I thought the boss-battles were okay. They were basically value-neutral to me, neither adding to nor detracting from the overall experience. So in that sense I suppose they can be criticized as a missed opportunity, but not a particularly major issue.

/shrug

In any case, people should keep in mind the game represents Edios Montreal's debut-effort. There was bound to be some flaws, what's amazing is that there were so few.

Not quite as a stunning a debut-effort as Rocksteady's Batman: Arkham Asylum, but pretty darn close.

(honestly, the thing that bothers me most about DX:HR is the too-small-head syndrome the character models have that DOES NOT look intentional, and this: http://www.gamesradar.com/deus-ex-human-revolution-did-they-really-think-we-wouldnt-notice-this/ )

If they didn't turn out they way Eidos wanted them to be, they would have either tweaked them, or they failed to give the correct direction in the first place. No reason to blame Grip, but good on them for owning up to it in an honest way.

He's a shooter fan aka dumb ass! You can tell by the design of the boss fights.

It's dumb even for a standard shooter.

All games have flaws. If you dwell too heavily on them, you end up shit-canning awesome games like Dead Island, but you should take care not to gloss over flaws that actually detract from your playing experience the way badly implemented boss fights can.

Its especially important for an RPG not to punish you for making a choice that is actually promoted the first time you select weapons for a mission... if you want to focus heavily on stealth or hacking as opposed to combat, there shouldnt be mandatory sections of the game which cant be overcome except through combat, any more than there should be mandatory sections of the game that cannot be overcome unless you specialised in hacking or stealth.

Vader, you need to start rating the games you review based on the degree to which they deliver the game experience they set out to create, rather than how well they live up to your personal expectations based on trailers, marketing hype and fanboy inclinations.
thestewieman [mail] Sep 21 2011, 06:28 am EDT
the reviews were rubbish, i didn't enjoy this game much and replay value (what replay value?)

this was just to save the studio from being destroyed by square enix and nothing else.
