Following the latest hypage surrounding Star Wars, we've learned that the upcoming movie will be in the hands of noted director JJ Abrams. Now it appears that Disney'll be making several stand-alone films set within the Star Wars universe - next to the standard saga, that is.Â
"We are in fact working on a few stand-alone films," Disney boss Bob Iger told CNBC's Julia Boorstin. "Larry Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are both working on films derived from great Star Wars characters that are not part of the overall saga. So we plan to make Star Wars VII, VIII and IX over roughly a six-year period of time starting in 2015. But there are going to be a few other films released in that period of time too."
I take consolation in a few things here. The first is that writer Lawernce Kasdan (Return of the Jedi, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Empire Strikes Back) is involved and the second is that JJ Abrams is a guy whose work speaks for itself.
However, the whole might easily stomped to death thanks to those greedy executives at Disney who just can't resist milking the cash cow (Cash cow? More like cash octopus...).

PS! I want my SW Republic Commando II !!!!!
I just hope they don't produce ink instead of milk...
The SW universe is massive and complex enough for as many stories as you'd like - the question is how jj is going to make them.
Money won't be an issue after all
You remember them, you've just blocked them out like the human mind blocks out anything too painful.
If I had the star wars universe in my hands, you bet your ass I'd create as much shit as possible because the universe is enormous with possibilities. The prequels squandered the universe so fucking much, it's like three movies-worth of the original Mass Effect 3 ending.
I look forward to seeing what Disney does. What Abrams does. There is so many directions to go and it's all so exciting. They got Kasdan, so shit will be good.
This is gonna be a lot more challenging than Star Trek. Trek fans are at least somewhat accustomed to 'updated' approaches to the IP, thanks to the many different TV series over the years. Overall, this ultimately made them more receptive to Abrams' approach.
Won't be as simple with the Star Wars fans.
