Dragon Age 2 PC DRM Explained

There's a post over on the BioWare Social Network forum, which goes into detail about the Dragon Age 2 PC DRM. Of course, Steam DRM is going to be packed with the Steam versions. Other versions though will authenticate themselves "after a select period of days" (still not specified). Here's the full info:

Recently there has been some concern over the DRM (Digital Rights Management) included with Dragon Age 2. Hopefully this post will help clarify what the DRM is for all versions of Dragon Age 2.

Steam versions use Steam DRM, no other DRM is added.

Non-Steam versions (digital or retail disc) are as follows:
- No disc check, you do not need the disc in drive to play.
- No limit on the total number of PCs you can install and play the game on.
- There is a limit to the number of unique/different PCs that can start/play the game within a time window [5 PCs in 24hrs].
- Each install requires logging in to your EA account to verify game ownership and if you are a member of these forums, you have an EA account.
- You can play offline but the game will require a login check after a select period of days.

Release Control (does not use securom)

- It does not install anything to the PC
- Sole purpose is to check with a server to validate whether the game release date has passed or not. - It completely removes itself after the game release date has passed
- You will not be able to play until that date has passed
- Dates & times are set to the retail street date per country.

Hopefully this explains the DRM included in Dragon Age 2.

This is fully acceptable! While I'm buying it on steam and it won't affect me (even tho steam is kinda DRM in itself). Those who choose not to buy on steam, shouldn't have anything to worry about. Bioware the new kings of gaming who never does anything wrong just set the stage for everyone else to follow. Ubisoft take note!

Like every other game in history, it'll be cracked within a week. EA should not underestimate the human desire to be free or at least to get things for free.

You want our money? do something that make us feel grateful for your efforts like stop with the fucking DLCs, game support like blizzard, and generally more heart and love to your products and client.

Making it inconvenient for us to pirate wouldn't stop us from pirating.

Non-steam drm somewhat annoying. Well, it's better than a lot of them, and it'll be cracked in just a few weeks like usual. I'll find out after I've played for a bit if I need to get a crack or not, but so far it sounds like it might not get in the way of my playing. (required disk or internet to play is a guaranteed get a crack time)
thestewieman: steam is like a fucking anal probe...

The part about release control sounds like we won't be getting an early review from gaming sites and mags, something similar to Starcraft 2 if you remember.

Its really sad how Companys think there DRM will stop piracy of there game cause there DRM is leetest. Good example codMW2 with steam. If the game is good people will buy it if the game is bad people wont buy it and rather just pirate it instead. DRM is more a turn off.

It seems to me companys are just proving who can be the most dick about there DRM sceme i stil think ubisoft is winning though.

Wow. That's a lot of babble just for DRM.

"You can play offline but the game will require a login check after a select period of days."

Why can't we activate the game online during installation, and leave it at that? My internet has been unstable for several days now. What if I can't logon when this game decides to check itself?

Well... I agree with Terminator here. This "checking after a select period of days" can be irritating but, in comparison to Ubisoft's DRM, it could have been a lot worse. Plus, you don't need to use the DVD all the time so I kind of like this idea.

Then again - DRMs are only slightly "slowing" the piracy nowadays. Why even bother creating an authentication server for a game? I don't know...

what happened to the days when you had to ask a friend to read you the cd-key because it was half a mile long and written on paper, made from real wood.

i miss the days when rainforests would sacrifice themselves for my pleasure.

damn hippies.
