Half-Life 3 After 2013, Game Possibly Inspired by Skyrim

According to a report from Journal du Gamer (translation via OXM), which cited a "trusted source" close to developer Valve, Half-life 3 is, in fact, in development. Supposedly the game won't be out until after 2013.

Meanwhile, and this is the cool bit, the anonymous source commented that the game was inspired by the RPG Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. The source also mentions that the current development process of Half-life 3 is "chaotic" and that the game went through several incarnations.

Valve will most likely deny these rumors, as they have so many times before, but so far this has been the only news we've had on the subject in a while (rumor or otherwise).

If the story is true, it would be interesting to see Half-life 3 with implemented Skyrim-style free-roam gameplay mechanics. If it's not true, I may kill several kittens.

Zombies are a must, as much as headcrabs and crowbars.

Half-Rim though that sounds more like a porn parody...

Don't much like linear gameplay, so some freedom is fine by me.

I will believe this when Valve announces it. Until then, I'm not holding my breath.

As much as I love both HL and Skyrim, I'm not sure mixing the two would be the best idea. HL's appeal was the strong narrative and character development. Valve has a knack for making you care about the characters and what happens next. An open-world environment is not conducive to that. Everyone bashes linear games but that's what helps drive a great narrative. It's difficult to capture that same effect when the player can wander off anywhere at any time.

I think that they refer to Skyrim only because of its ability to become extremely successful and popular, when it was released five years later than its predecessor, and they wish it would be the same with HL3. I'm 19, and pretty much everyone who is younger than me doesn't remember HL2 at all. So it could be hard for Valve to successfuly engage the younger audience with this.

This anonymous source is talking from their asscrack, and as with all rumors, should be ignored until an official statement is made.

Skyrim as the inspiration for HL3. Don't make me fucking laugh. 4/10 Troll, is my guess.

It seems the internet fanbois have decided skyrim is the perfect game and all should strive to it.....
Alas that is not the case, its not even that good a game.

Valve aren't stupid, they know there is no point with big anouncements or leaked news. When and if they release HL3 they'll do it with virtually no fanfare or some very convoluted ARG. It's just their style.

I'm almost positive that the inspiration in this article is in terms to the environments and not so much the RPG or free-roaming aspects. If anyone recalls, there were some side-tracking moments throughout the series that helped keep things interesting. Sure, they were minor but they kept the game from feeling linear, even though the damn game is a straight line.

Also, HOPEFULLY they give off a "choice" ending like they did in HL1. Don't care how stupid it was, the option opened up for some interesting bits.

Also, has anyone played Black Mesa yet?

A close source, my ass.

And hell yes, Black Mesa is pretty damn great. Outdated graphics and an occasional crash here and there, but overall it's worth playing. More worth playing than Dragon Age II, that's for sure. Better writing too.

Development process is chaotic. Hm. I didn't expect less from Valve.
