Halo Reach Might Use Natal

Apart from Halo 3: ODST, Bungie is also working on another mysterious Halo project - Halo Reach. The development studio's Harold Ryan talked a bit on the subject of Halo Reach. In fact, he mentioned the game could be compatible with Microsoft's recently announced motion-sensitive wonder, Project Natal.

Seatle Times has the story, in which Harold Ryan said he's "enthusiastic" about using Natal. "I absolutely think 'Reach' could be enabled with it," he stated.

We still don't know what this game is all about, albeit it seems logical for MS to use it as a flagship title to promote its new technology.

Harold Ryan may be "enthusiastic" about using Natal, but I am not (at least not yet).

None of us sane, game-loving people are. Unless, of course, Bungie has a controller+Natal combo in mind. I would take that.

Peaking around corners by moving your head, throwing grenades by doing a throw action, changing guns by swapping hands around your sides (individual places for different guns), enabling night vision with doing a swipe action besides your eyes, etc. That would REALLY work well, imo.

that would be fucking gay
Ftmch [mail] Jun 30 2009, 07:18 am EDT
Halo Reach? That's just fucking stupid.
SpaceMonkey [mail] Jun 30 2009, 07:23 am EDT
Natal honestly feel like a work out gimmick.
Vader [STAFF] [mail] Jun 30 2009, 07:37 am EDT
It doesn't appear to be something that would please hardcore gamers. When I play a game I'd definitely want to try some form of physical immerson just for the fun of it. However, I'll always prefer a traditional keyboard/mouse thing and a gamepade over all this motion-sensitive crap.

If Natal is going to completely replace the controller, then I might have to re-think my plan to get a 360. Besides the fact that I'm an old-school gamer, I have no room at home for a Natal setup. I doubt MS is going to buy me a nice house so I can set Natal up properly.
Kurio [mail] Jun 30 2009, 08:25 am EDT
Meh, im fine with it aslong they wont dumb down good games so they can be played on Natal, i already dislike pc games being so to suit consoles.
And aslong they wont start some mad fad where everyone is making games natal-only, just like the current mmo fad, im fine with it.

I mean, I dont mind exercice, infact i swim 2h a day, and play airsoft 2 days a week... i got plenty.
But games? they are ment to be sitting confortably and relax while playing.
un om bun [mail] Jun 30 2009, 08:44 am EDT
What a bunch of fucking bullshit. Gimme a mind control gadget or die.
JamesPC [mail] Jun 30 2009, 09:33 am EDT
Before MS makes Halo Reach, they really should give us Halo 3 on PC!
Juxtapose [mail] Jun 30 2009, 09:36 am EDT
The key word here is "could." I'll believe it when I see it. I'll also wait to see how Natal really turns out before I pass judgement on it, but right now, it simply looks like a gimmick.

It does sounds like a move in the right direction for virtual reality gaming though, if natal work without a hitch and a VR eye piece is perfected then we have VR in our own home.

I don't know if natal is capable of such a feat and I'm doubtful.

virtual reality (lol)
in what time are u living? the 1980's?

this sort of shit isn't going to change anything, and it's actually not important for the evolution of anything!
it's pointless useless crap, get over yourself with your kiddy fantasy's and grow up!
thestewieman [mail] Jun 30 2009, 01:23 am EDT
virtual reality in itself is an old ancient thing, as virtual is the exact thing you don't want.
it's just going to be reality.

rock solid molecular projection, nothing virtual about that.
virtual reality is an 80's pop-culture word, i can't associate with science.
things which are going to change things isn't some fantasy crap, but cold hard laboratory science which isn't going to be around in your living room for the next 50years...

people are going to laugh at virtual reality and 3d projection in 100 years, as they are quite laughable and already ancient technology's.
thestewieman [mail] Jun 30 2009, 01:47 am EDT
Large Hadron Collider.
anyone?
Kurio [mail] Jun 30 2009, 01:55 am EDT
So you are basicly associating the sci-fi definition of virtual reality with pen and paper rpgs and light projection?
thats just... wrong.
the notion of virtual reality is the creation of a ambient that isnt real, totally virtual, thus, virtual reality.

Now the way to achieve that can vary, for example:
Like you said, some way to create inside a controlled environment, like a room, using some kind of nanotechnology or the sorts, a physically tangible environment, wich is still virtual since you could just remove it all with a botton click.

Or, the more common virtual reality approach, the sensation inductive one, where you basicly plug an emitter insider your spine and brain wich will send your brain signals of a totally virtual world, where you can exist just like in reality (matrix as the most known example) basicly cutting off the impulses brain-muscle and translating them into the game or simulation.

Since the very way we perceive reality is already entirely through electrical signals, we might already be inside a virtual reality for all we know, and this has been discussed for millenia, before all our technology even existed, the whole existentialism and nihilism thought.
So while the whole concept already existed for ages, the ways to achieve it still dont, at max you can consider hallucinogenic drugs, sensory deprivation and trance to have a similiar effec but thats it.

Also, if you do achieve that, it will have tremendous impact in our culture and society, as some of those realities might be better then our "real" one, and people might prefer to just be pluged for life, also the whole notion of what reality is will change... well too long to just explain here
thestewieman [mail] Jun 30 2009, 02:03 am EDT
eventually it's not going to just be projection, it's just going to be matter.
there is nothing science-fiction about it, it's already possible.
Kurio [mail] Jun 30 2009, 02:10 am EDT
Refering to those prototype matter "printers" using nanotech?
If we actually manage to survive as a species untill those are fully operational, it will likelly destroy the world as we know... one step closer to having 3/4 megacorps who supply the raw materials (matter for the printers) controlling all the trade and consequentally ze world (muhaha)
SpaceMonkey [mail] Jun 30 2009, 02:23 am EDT
All I'm thinking is a simple eye ware for the player to see a game in a 360 degree environment and maybe natal's motion sensing to effectively sense the players movement to map and interact with that virtual environment.

I really don't understand how all this went the science fiction, matrix type VR route.
Kurio [mail] Jun 30 2009, 02:28 am EDT
because we are bored the that kind of conversation is semi-decent, besides for the first time a halo topic spawned something aside from pure shitstorm (this conversation) reason enough to rejoice!
Besides you said "move in the right direction for virtual reality gaming" so why not think about virtual reality "matrix" style for gaming and other porpuses? in theory is really simple infact, but theres litle research in that area as (luckly) its highly controversial, since it works both ways, you could use it to bypass brain entirelly and "zomg mindcontrol" histeria comes, wich well, its good since it puts some boundaries.

That, and im close to raging with all the bruno adds...
Exia [mail] Jun 30 2009, 02:28 am EDT
natal what a stupid name
Kurio [mail] Jun 30 2009, 02:52 am EDT
Natal is christmas in portuguese, I wonder if it stands for something or they just went for that name out of nowhere...
iirc natal can also mean birthplace in english? it does in portuguese but im under the impression it does too in english
thestewieman [mail] Jun 30 2009, 04:41 am EDT
natal means not-for-all (lol)
Vodoo [mail] Jun 30 2009, 05:27 am EDT
