Modern Warfare 2 'Stimulus' Sold 17M, Second DLC Soon
During its financial conference call yesterday, publisher Activision officially confirmed that the Stimulus DLC for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 sold 17 million units. Unsurprisingly, a second DLC has been mentioned, currently slated for a release later in 2010.

Well, all of this is pretty much unexpected, seeing as we're talking about one of the most popular games ever released. Amazing, and once you're done with the incredibly short single-player campaign, you're left with a solid multiplayer mode. But that's just it. There's nothing really revolutionary about this game and yet it continues to sell like crazy.

I haven't played Call of Duty since Modern Warfare 1. Guess I better start catching up. It shouldn't be hard, since the main campaigns are only 5-6 hours long!

I guess bitching about DLC is futile. But at least it feels good.

I hear the cows from Activision's headquaters. They sure milk alot!

There sure are alot of stupid people. 17 Million?

Unreal!

Pretty sure I can live without a few maps for 15bucks. Maybe they should fix the stupid matchmaking servers that constantly glitch out leaving you staring at the loading screen for 5 minutes.

any news on the breakdown by console?

At least we have confirmed data that there are at least 17M idiots out there.

Well, it’s the same ‘people’ who buy Silly Bandz (and there are plenty of those).

Silly shaped rubber-band bracelets, that fit snugly around your wrist, help the players to maintain their focus on the gameplay.

They also add to the seriousness of the gaming experience and come as a fitting replacement for the infamous Night Vision Goggles.

I was stupid enough to buy the DLC... Waste of money. I could've bought a cheap bottle of liquor to help cope with my dull life.

Plus I didn't think that there could be a map with more camping than Derail, but Overgrown has taken that crown without a doubt.
Darkthor: overgrown was ALWAYS a map for camping in cod4...shou;ve tr...
jokester: I never did play COD4 as I was in the Army and owning a tv/x...

Like jokester, I also bought this recent Map DLC pack for my PC version on MW2, and had no ability to play my old maps for a day or so, and the last time I checked we still have random game mode rotations with the new maps (no ability yet to chose the MP game type you want to play on them).

This to me is very bad implementation, as you should never lose the ability to play the core game (maps), just because you bought new ones, even if this happens only for a day. As I have no way of knowing if the add-on maps will ever allow players to choose the type of game mode they wish to play on them, I doubt I will buy new maps in the future having been disatisfied on how these latest ones can't be played by choice (unless you want to constantly join - quit - join - quit - join...... until the MP game mode you are interested in playing comes up).

My friends who got this one PS3 have it FOR FREE because of the File sharing loophole. At least M$ got it right by being smart.
thestewieman [mail] May 09 2010, 03:59 pm EDT
yes piracy is a big fat pink elephant in Microsoft green locker room (xbox360).
the xbox360 doesn't need a loophole, as it is a loophole for piracy. @finaleve

there actually is a hack out there (china) which microsoft can't detect on live ;) and u can even update the firmware (u can change the CPU ID of a clean (non hacked xbox360).
Cheddar [mail] May 10 2010, 04:12 am EDT
Every console is hackable, of course. PS3, 360, Wii, PS2, Xbox, GameCube. Whatever.

It's obviously a moot point though, because it doesn't change the fact that far fewer console gamers than PC gamers are ultimately willing to hack their consoles and void their warranty, either because they lack the savvy to do it or because they'd just rather not take the risk.

On the PC, however, there's no risk at all to piracy. You don't have to hack your hardware and there's never any risk of MS or Sony releasing an update that detects new hack methods and perma-bans you from ever doing anything online again until you get new hardware.

Anyway, stewie, you'd like to think the PS3 is somehow less hackable than the 360.

Dream on, idiot.

Getting back on topic...

It's just delightful (read: nauseating) how Activision can ridiculously overcharge for their DLC and yet still achieve massive sales.

This is why it's pointless to whine about DLC. You guys can hate on it all day long, but examples like this prove that the vast majority of the market doesn't care, and happily puckers up its asshole to get sodomized.

If the market bears it, it won't ever change.
thestewieman [mail] May 10 2010, 09:18 am EDT
no i don't think it's less hackable people just aren't going to download as much games.
as for 1 PS3 game u could download 4 to 8 xbox360 games.

donkey brains, i am just stating a fact that it is a massive problem on the xbox360.
goes to show who's a biased little trollboy.
Cheddar: Except it's a fact it's not a "massive" problem, for the 360...
thestewieman: Microsoft doesn't want to talk about it but just check torre...

A friend pointed out that it is a paradigm shift. In years to come, the percentage of gamers who has grown up on paying for DLC will grow, and therefore the business model more accepted. We'll be a lost generation of gamers who had games complete and working out of the box... with nice printed manuals... and clothe maps... and little cool but useless trinkets (e.g. "moonstone").

:)
Cheddar [mail] May 10 2010, 01:05 pm EDT
I'm hoping against hope that as the stupid children/teenagers grow up, they'll start being more considerate with their money, and abstain from spending money on bad deals.

Bad deals such as a 15 dollar multiplayer map-pack that's mostly just ported maps from the previous game.

If it doesn't sell, it won't be sold.
