Peter Molyneux, the man behind the Fable series and the original Dungeon Keeper, was appalled with EA Mobile's version of Dungeon Keeper, particular with its use of monetization to keep gamers playing without taking breaks.
"The free-to-play mechanic was so dominant that it obscured all the fantastic work they did. It was like a horrible odor," Molyneux said about the new Dungeon Keeper. "I wanted to play and keep on playing and keep on playing. But I just kept getting beaten up for being an impatient gamer."
However, this doesn't mean Molyneux is going to forsake monetization in his next strategy game, Godus. In fact, he says he's found a way to make the game's monetization techniques "delightful" and those "that haven't existed before" and will be "fresh and as new and as different from anything you've ever seen in any game."
So how will he dazzle us with these new techniques? He wouldn't really say in his interview with Pocket Gamer outside the following statement:
"You've got to be subtle about it and slowly layer in those mechanics. The point we introduce monetization depends on the player, and the game maker has to get you into the right mindset."
So he won't be bullying us into paying money; the game will slowly brainwash us into forking it over.
Oh and don't call Godus a free-to-play game in front of Mr. Molyneux.
"There cannot be a term that is less true," he insisted. "What we need is a new term. And that term is more like 'invest-to- play'. What really are we doing? We are tempting people to invest some of their money into a game."
