I'm sure most of you haven't missed the news that Peter Jackson will be making The Hobbit into a movie trilogy, as opposed to filming just two movies as initially intended. Now, I'm not entirely sure if this is a good idea. When they made The Lord of the Rings there was plenty of source material to draw from and with The Hobbit, it's just like one book and that's it. Of course, they can grab something out of LotR and The Silmarillion and use that in the movie if they want, but all in all, it seems a bit too much to stretch 'The Hobbit' into three bloody movies.

I dunno.

What do you guys think?

UPDATE: Here's the P.J.'s announcement.

Morning,

Really can't see how they'll stretch this out to two films let alone three.

I''m shocked to the bone with this news, the hobbit is vastly shorter than LOTR's so i'm assuming lot's of extra make believe hollywood trash content will be added,so sort of fucks up the original story if you ask me,i'll stick to my first edition of the Hobbit which is my pride and joy.

I don't mind it. Faith in Peter we have. Jackson that is.

Well, I've posted the link to the news, just so you don't get any ideas that I'm bluffing.
Terminator Aug 22 2012, 05:08 am EDT
I think this is a HUGE mistake. The Hobbit doesn't have enough material for two movies. Three movies is ridiculous! They should treat The Hobbit like every other LOTR book, and make a three hour movie.
im_stardust Aug 22 2012, 05:53 am EDT
I think YOU are a HUGE mistake.
Terminator: Of course you do :)

The fact that he's making a trilogy it's pretty much old news. The story from the Hobbit fits just fine in three movies. And even so, the story would still be narrowed, not stretched.

And deciding to make a third movie isn't necessarily a money making move.

This news scares and excites me. I hope they know exactly what they're doing.

You guys read this news but don't really know what your talking about. The Hobbit movie isn't just about the Hobbit. It's about all that occurred around that time of the story. That's how the will fill up 3 movies. Also, they haven't actually decided to film 3 films instead of 2, they decided to make it 3 movies after they saw all the material they shot for the 2 movies, they wanted to do the story just. Peter Jackson definitely didn't do this for money, he's a great lotr fan and does it to make the most out of the Hobbit movie.

Look folks, the problem is very simple, and I really don't see a solution for it.

Three movies require three climaxes.

The Hobbit as a story ONLY HAS ONE CLIMAX.

So how exactly are the first two movies going to avoid being slow and padded, and dissatisfying at the end? They're basically going to be forced to embellish lesser scenes in the book in an attempt to pass them off as suitable climax scenes for the first two movies... and it's not really going to work.

Jackson can draw from Tolkien's appendices to pad the content, but a good movie needs a good crescendo, and the fluff that comes from Tolkien's appendices just won't provide that.

"Of course, they can grab something out of LotR and The Silmarillion and use that in the movie if they want"

Jackson doesn't have the rights to use Silmarillion and Tolkein's estate is unlikely to sell them to him since they didn't like his LotR adaptation.

Stop ur bitchin'!! Its Peter Jackson, it'll be fine! :)

How do you make a trilogy out of one prequel book? Cant figure that out unless they stretch it and pad it.
im_stardust Aug 22 2012, 10:12 am EDT
Do you people know what a book looks like?

The Hobbit has around 300 pages. You can do 2 trilogies and a 60 x 1h episode TV SHOW.

Vodoo Aug 22 2012, 10:19 am EDT
stardust you're confusing Tolkien's stories with the recent highschool fantasy trend.

to be honest, i've never counted but there has to be at least a dozen shows and movies about menstruating vampires and werewolves in hair salons.

christ, just thinking about it makes me want to shave my jugular.

From a user in that news link, sounds convincing from what I remember:

"I have the answer for those of you who say," why is one book being made into three movies, when the Lord of the Rings was 3 books and only 3 movies long". Many people don't understand how the movies came to be to begin with.... New Line Cinema took a huge gamble from the beginning when choosing to film The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. They took a gamble and gave director Peter Jackson a couple hundred million and said go make us three films. Peter Jackson filmed all 3 of the LOTR movies at one time. Then from there New Line Cinemas crossed there fingers and hoped that they would do good at the box office. The gamble surely paid off! To put a long story short, if New Line Cinemas had only of known in advance that the LOTR Trilogy was going to rake in the money that it did, im sure that each of the Lord of the Rings books would have been made into 3 movies each :) and I would have paid to go see every single one of them!"
Damocles Aug 22 2012, 12:00 pm EDT
I'm ok with it, as long as it's 3 movies under/around 2 hours, and not 3.5. Keep in mind, if you really wanted to, the "War of 5 Armies" and the aftermath could be a whole movie in and of itself.
BmmB Aug 22 2012, 12:17 pm EDT
Hobbits are gay and this movie will be too.

C'mon, three movies involving gay Hobbitos???

All this rumble is meaningless .
It's going to be beautiful, visually,
And yet so boring I'll risk the ban and light a joint in the movie theater just to pass the time .
Killer Klown Aug 22 2012, 01:39 pm EDT
It's actually not going to be just 'The Hobbit'. It's going to involve alot of the information presented in the appendices of LotR that happened between the end of the Hobbit and the beginning of Fellowship; The White Council and Sauron getting kicked out of Dol Guldur, et cetera. There's basically a sixty year span there alone; plus all the side information surrounding the Hobbit itself.
Klaymor Aug 22 2012, 02:25 pm EDT
With the amount of content they had to leave out for the LOTR movies when making only 3 movies I can understand the need for 3 movies for the Hobbit.
They could have made LOTR into 9 movies easily or better still it could have been like A Song of Ice and Fire (aka Game of Thrones) and made 10 episodes per book.
