Black Ops still selling shows what kind of shit people like!

It proves that (male) gamers are more likely to choose violent entertainment over cerebral entertainment, given the option (which should surprise no one, really).

That, and apparently Mortal Kombat as an IP still possesses a surprising degree of market penetration.

Hmm, never liked Portal (or any of Valve's games for that matter) so this is actually cool news.
optimus slime [mail] May 13 2011, 07:14 am EDT
Not to take anything away from it, but Portal 2 is not as 'cerebral' as it's predecessor. They've built upon the awe-provoking gameplay, but the challenges are not as difficult because people got used to the mechanic. The new tools, gadgets and various tidbits are fun, but they didn't use them to their full potential, imo.
All in all, it's witty at best.

However, I like that Valve is being Valve again and that they released the modding tools, which is what makes their games shine. Without it, Portal 2 is a short play-and-forget experience.

As for Mortal Kombat, it's understandable. People have been waiting for the worthy sequel for almost 2 decades. And this is certainly it. It's not only the best game of the series, but it has also set the bar for the genre.
If you put all that into consideration, the list is not surprising.
Cheddar: You said it, though -- two decades. 20 years. Which means ...

Set the bar for the franchise, perhaps, but not for the genre. No way, man. As a fighter game in and of itself, it does nothing at all new.

The game's pretty good and critics are receiving fairly well, but it's basically just old-school Mortal Kombat with current-generation visuals.

That, by definition, can not be raising the bar -- it's actually dropping it down to an older, simpler level... albeit an entertainingly nostalgic one.
optimus slime: For basic fighting mechanics no, but it actually does raise ...

So,this is only retail?
Sujet [mail] May 13 2011, 10:11 am EDT
Yes this is only retail, and proves nothing since Steam had Portal 2 on %10 preorder and me and everyone i know preorded it. We also got a free copy of portal 1, and now we have like 2 each since we already had it.
Cheddar [mail] May 13 2011, 10:45 am EDT
I hadn't thought about that at all. I should have, since it's so obvious.

More than likely then MK sales haven't beat Portal 2 sales at all, since we can be certain Steam raked in a huge number of transactions.

Steam represents the heart of Valve game fandom, afterall.
GrgoljBlaster [mail] May 13 2011, 03:20 pm EDT
I won't lie - if they released PC version of Mortal Kombat at the same time as console one, I'd buy it in an instant (along with Portal 2 ofcourse). It's MK for f*ck's sake, we waited for this a long time (since MK Trilogy) and as for what I saw, it deserves the praise.

I'm thoroughly enjoying Mortal Kombat, mainly due to nostalgia. It was after Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 that I got out of the franchise, so this reboot is right up my alley.

For Portal 2, I personally have no interest in it, but to each their own.

2. Portal 2 (PS3, 360, PC - EA)

EA? Not Valve?
Cheddar [mail] May 15 2011, 01:29 am EDT
EA isn't Valve's publisher. Valve simply has a deal with EA that lets EA package and distribute Valve's games to brick-and-mortar retailers.

And since brick-and-mortar retail sales are the only thing NPD's charts measure, we see EA's name listed there.

I see. Thanks for clarifying that =)
