Potential Mass Suicide at Xbox 360 Plant
Filed under: MICROSOFT, XBOX 360, CHINA

According to a report from WantChina Times, 300 workers at a Foxconn manufacturing plant in Wuhan, China have threatened to throw themselves off the building's roof after a pay dispute earlier this month (thanks Kotaku). It appears that the people who worked on the Xbox 360 assembly line, were not given a pay rise by Foxconn management. Instead they were given a choice - to remain on at their current wage or to accept compensated dismissal. A lot of the workers agreed to compensated dismissal, albeit Foxconn then withdrew the offer. At that point, the mass suicide threat commenced. The mayor of Wuhan, reportedly, arrived at the scene to help talk the workers down.

Microsoft made an official statement, in response to the story: "Microsoft takes working conditions in the factories that manufacture its products very seriously, and we are currently investigating this issue. We have a stringent Vendor Code of Conduct that spells out our expectations, and we monitor working conditions closely on an ongoing basis and address issues as they emerge. Microsoft is committed to the fair treatment and safety of workers employed by our vendors, and to ensuring conformance with Microsoft policy."

Evidently, the name Foxconn has popped up in other similarly baffling stories, with reports of worker suicides in 2010 - eventually, management installed nets on the sides of its buildings to prevent such protests in future... Well, that clearly worked like a charm.

Microsoft is more worried about losing its cheaper labor force than the conditions under which these employees work. Hence manufacturing over seas.

There is a Foxconn factory like a kilometer from my house. A lots of Vietnamese people work there, but I wonder where do they come from. I only see them go from their shifts, but then they disappear. You never see an Asian in the city. There has to be some hole to Vietnam or something.

Also, my friend's father works there as some kind of boss, and his salary is quite good, from what I hear. One less for the workers, I guess!

Foxconn, haven't they had suicides on production lines for well known products sold in the USA before? I guess they have a LOT of contracts.
Dean_Demon: Or just alot of failures

I love Microsoft's super generic answer and I truly sympathize with what I believe to be a genuine lack of interest on their part. If they lose sleep over this, there's a very good chance they might end up with bags under their eyes. Think about it.

Anyway, those sweatshop workers are being revoltingly ungrateful. They must be completely unable to appreciate what a privilege it is to be building fun machines for their first world country colleagues' little angels. I'd slave away night and day if I knew it would help put a smile on some spoiled achievement whore's face on the other side of the globe.

Threatening to commit mass suicide... pff, how selfish can those curs get ?

I've never heard of Foxconn until now, but I'm well aware of how bad China's working conditions are. My cousin owns a small factory in China and the workers actually sleep in the building. The greedy asshole won't pay them shit. It makes me so mad, but there is nothing I can do about it.
