My god.
Those games did them as a shell around you that spawned rocks that traveled directly at you at a speed based on yours.
I found the best way to dogfight in an asteroid field was to 'sit & spin'. That's cut engines to 0, and spin in place to target foes. Normally, the enemy rarely hit a rock, but with sit & spin, they ran into them all the time, while I never did.
