Star Trek Director to Film New Star Wars Movie
Uros "Vader" Pavlovic
06:11 am EDT @ January 25th, 2013

The latest report on the new Star Wars movie indicates that J.J. Abrams is, supposedly, going to film Star Wars: Episode VII for Disney and LucasFilm.
Although this still hasn't been officially confirmed, it puts the Ben Affleck rumor to rest (there were reports that Affleck might sit in the director's chair for the new SW movie).
Star Wars: Episode VII already has Little Miss Sunshine and Toy Story 3 writer Michael Arndt on board.
All things considered, these guys seem like the right choice, even though I did have my heart set on the whole thing being handled by Christopher Nolan, but I'm afraid that's just a pipe dream now.
Also, it's a shame Kershner isn't alive. He'd be the perfect choice.

Speaking of which, I watched Skyfall a few days ago, and you can really tell that Sam Mendes has been influenced by Nolan when making the film (he has said so himself if I recall correctly), a lot of scenes really had that "nolan-feel" to them. Pretty good stuff. I hope he directs a couple more.
Oh God no!
Star Wars Episode VII is not a reboot and mustn't be treated as such.
Honestly, that Abrams Star Trek movie is somewhat what the Star Wars prequels was/should've been, bunch of action and shit . Lucky Star Trek, it had fairly good writing and, I say, good directing. I'll give lens-flare rape a pass.
[Insert complaints about prequels]. I only see Abrams as the new director (if it is really official) as good news. Without George Lucas, I see only silver-linings.
And this is because there shouldn't fucking be a Stars Wars episode VII in the first place.
Then I snapped into a better place, but I had to wait til I was 25.
Now I don't give a shit about Star Wars! May the Universe explode, suckers!
The entire generation that watched Star Wars and listened to ABBA is in their 50s now.
Only 30 more years of this...
WoW! This is going to be rich! I expect some Tom and Jerry Kids with 15 years old actors waving their dicks to one another in a colective masturbation frenzy.
Flip flopper! Is this guy running for office?
The thing is, the only way Abrams can actually put some modern polish and sophistication into this glorified B-movie space opera is if he significantly 'remixes' a bit about it all, much like he's already doing with Star Trek.
And the veteran Star Wars fans will surely go apeshit in rage over it... I don't think they'll deal with it anywhere near as well as the 'Trekies' did, already being so upset with what's come before. And this is why I think it'd just be for the best if the franchise were simply allowed to rest in peace.
At worst, Abrams' attempts at a more modern vision for Star Wars will be hamstrung by Disney execs looking to milk the proven formula of the prequels (which while broadly derided, still made a ton of money anyway)... at best, Abrams will be permitted to effectively quasi-reboot the IP to make it fresh again, but the legions of neck-beard Star Wars fans suffering from the delusion that the 1970s magic can somehow be perfectly replicated in the 21st century will be just as frothing at the mouth over it as they were with the prequels.
Maybe I'm just being too cynical. Maybe Abrams will be given the license he needs to be bold and fresh with the IP, and maybe the fans will be more reasonable about it than I give them credit for.
Can't help but doubt it, though.
