Star Wars: The Old Republic Only Needs 500K Subscribers to Make Reasonable Profit
The upcoming Bioware/EA endeavor, Star Wars: The Old Republic MMORPG will only need half a million subscribers to be profitable according to EA CEO John Riccitielloin in a statement to Gamespot. Most of the interview focused around how SW:TOR works in a marketplace dominated by World of Warcraft. While the game will be profitable with less than a million, in needs more than that to be something worth writing home about from where EA's investors are standing. Mr. Riccitielloin also commented on how much of the audience for The Old Republic would come from smaller games, otherwise known as not WoW.

I think Blizzard may have exhausted the market on this sort of thing. All MMORPGs are basically the same, only with different artwork and different names for things, at least in my experience. The idea of another MMORPG even set in the Star Wars universe kind of puts me to sleep. The concept has worn out its welcome with me. If you're different, I wish you the best and hope that Space Battles: Ye Olde Republic is better than crack. If it isn't, I have some crack I can sell you.

Even if it's the worst game ever they'll get more subscriptions then that just because it's Star Wars.

TOR looks like a most horrible compromise. It's basically a single player game with a watered down story, that has a MMORPG's boring gameplay, AND you must share the experience with obnoxious SW fanboys, while paying a monthly motherfuckin fee.

Did I get that right ?

Nope you nailed it head on. Its all about money and screwing over fans of the original single player games they never finished. But hey it star wars of course it will sell it better. The game already cost over 300 million dollars to make.

I can't wait for Guild Wars 2 to show everybody how it's done.

TOR was a bad idea. They should have made KOTOR 3 dammit!

I'm still pretty excited for this one, Bioware hasn't let me down yet and what I've seen so far tells me they've gotten creative with the ganre which give me great hope as someone who has never liked an MMO enought to play for more than a couple months.

Meh. I love Bioware, but my hopes aren't too high for this. I would rather they made KOTOR 3, but I'll probably give this a shot when it comes out anyway.
