Bethesda Softworks, a ZeniMax Media company, today announced The Elder Scrolls Online, an MMO in development at ZeniMax Online Studios. The Elder Scrolls Online will be the first Elder Scrolls game to allow gamers to explore the legendary Elder Scrolls world with others.
The Elder Scrolls Online is being developed for PC and Mac under the leadership of industry veteran Matt Firor, who has spent the last two decades working in online game development. Details about the game are revealed in an exclusive cover story in Game Informer's June issue, which ships to subscribers and newsstands this month.
"We have been working hard to create an online world in which players will be able to experience the epic Elder Scrolls universe with their friends, something fans have long said they wanted," said Matt Firor, game director of The Elder Scrolls Online. "It will be extremely rewarding finally to unveil what we have been developing the last several years. The entire team is committed to creating the best MMO ever made ' and one that is worthy of The Elder Scrolls franchise."
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is the most recent title set in the award-winning Elder Scrolls universe. Skyrim, developed by Bethesda Game Studios, was released in November 2011 and enjoyed worldwide critical and commercial success. Skyrim earned hundreds of 'Game of the Year' awards, including top honors at the 2012 Game Developers Choice Awards, the 15th Annual 2012 Interactive Achievement Awards held at the 2012 D.I.C.E. Summit, and at the 2011 Video Game Awards. Internationally, Skyrim shipped over 10 million units within the first month of its release, was the second highest grossing title in the industry last year, and is the fastest selling title in Steam's history.
The Elder Scrolls Online will be featured on magazine covers across Europe and in online stories in the coming months which will provide gamers with more information about this exciting title.
The Elder Scrolls Online has not yet been rated by the ESRB.
Absolutely no comment. We all knew this day was going to come.
Allow me to vomit in every possible direction.

The TES world is a wonderful place, a great SP environment. The world doesn't need more MMO's and I just hope that this wont be the end of the SP series.
If they go the same way as KOTOR did and don't continue the great TES SP-experiences I'll hate them a bit. Greedy bastards. And here I was thinking the MMO genre was dying.
Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. I hope Skyrim gets a couple of proper, large Shivering Isles-sized expansions before the end.
But... 'The Elder Scrolls Online is being developed for PC and Mac under the leadership of industry veteran Matt Firor, who has spent the last two decades working in online game development.'
We don't want no fucking veteran! We want fresh ideas, and more of a multiplayer TES, not some WoW clone, we've had enough of those. And, proven by TOR, no matter how good the game is, it is not going to beat WoW, so it's pointless to try.

I can't wait !
Lets fuck everyone Online!! ROFL!!
"-Third person perspective
-The game uses a hotbar to activate skills like other traditional MMOs
-Visually it looks like other Hero Engine MMOs like SWTOR"
What? That's not Elder Scrolls. That's a WoW clone. Is this some sort of joke?

Fus Ro DURRRRRRRRRRRRR. A first impression has never had my hopes plummet so fast into the ground. I'll still keep an eye on it, but one of fear and disgust.
Fuck you WoW, and all your clones!
Anyway, the worst thing will not be this game, but that Bethesda might just spend the next 10 years cashing in on this cow, and not develop anything else. When TES VI eventually comes out (and it will), it will be so crappy and formatted on the hugely successful online experience, it will suck too. There'll be sucking all around!
If they had gone with Skyrim's Engine, First person perspective and gameplay mechanics; only the world being filled with real players (also the option of starting your own store later on with an NPC assistant), it would have been interesting to look into. The way they have designed it instead (a WOW, SWTOR clone) is just uninspiring for existent Elder Scrolls fans.
And the excuse they gave was the lamest one, "We wanted to make the crowd switching from other MMOs feel more comfortable and at home." What?! That was the last thing I expected to hear from Bethesda. They like pioneered the large expanse First person RPGs. Since when did they become a follower?
realTES games. I don't know how I didn't notice that before, its right there at the beginning of the press release.ZeniMax Online Studios was created specifically for MMOGs and has nothing to do with the team that has created Skyrim, Oblivion, etc. They also have no history of releases to their name to give anyone objective confidence in their abilities.
I'm thinking this TES MMORPG is going to be a complete failure for Bethesda Softworks. It's a market already dominated by two other mega-iconic MMORPGs. It was risky enough for Old Republic to try to establish itself with the WoW elephant in the room, and that was with the benefit of an IP even more famous than TES and a studio with better talent than whatever scrubs are at ZeniMax Online Studios. Throw in MMOGs with orbiting established niches like Guild Wars, and I just don't see how there's any room for a TES MMOG to be anywhere near as successful as Bethesda Softworks/Zenimax wants it to be.
