Time Chooses Alan Wake as GotY

It would appear that Time magazine has chosen what they think is the best game in 2010. Well, people, according to them, it's none other than the Xbox 360 exclusive, Alan Wake.

"Its unsettled titular character carries adult concerns - a stalled career, a troubled marriage - into a psychological thriller set in a town taken over by a shadowy occult force."

"Its mix of meta-awareness and Hitchcockian suspense make Alan Wake a unique and fun experiment and one of the best games of the year," they add.

Now who are we to question Time?

Okay, while Alan Wake is a pretty decent game I am fully confident that there have been plenty of releases this year that were better achievements than what Remedy offered in their action-flavored psychological thriller (of course, I'm certainly not gonna say what they are, because you'll find out in our upcoming 2010 Game of the Year Awards).

Having eventually just finished Wake over the previous weekend and currently making my way through the DLC, I find the general average reviews to be a bit bewildering.

The story and characters were meticulous in their crafting. A chilling story at times matched up with beautiful graphics and gameplay pacing.

Better than Mass Effect 2, maybe not. However I feel its a game which demands higher praise than it has unfortunately garnered.
jules11788: i completely agree, the story, acting, characters, and theme...

The problem with Alan Wake is that it was released too late. Everyone knows this. Well, everyone in the game-obsessed nerd community that is. If they launched the game earlier, it would have been bloody awesome.

It's not GotY if it's not on PC!

Fully deserved or not, I do like the pick for the fact that it's Time's pick, specifically... BECAUSE, Alan Wake is exactly the sort of game that heel-dragging traditionalists like Roger Ebert desperately want to pretend don't exist, as they continue to cling to the (ignorant) idea that games aren't art.

Time is a powerful mainstream publication that can't be ignored, however, and getting more of the gaming 'uninitiated' to notice a game like Alan Wake is going to help forcefully change the world-views of people of Ebert's ilk.

So, there's that, at least.

Anyway, the real GotY is Red Dead Redemption.
Alchi: I agree about Ebert part, but I can't agree abour RDR, simpl...
Cheddar: I pick RDR because it's basically top-notch in every importa...

You do know it was originaly supposed to be PC exclusive? The game was practicaly commercial for Intel i7 CPUs!

btw Starcraft 2 or Amnesia for GOTY Wooo!

Hmm. Alan Wake was certainly more commercialized than any other game. It was portrayed as an intelligent, an 'art'. It could be one of the reasons why Times choose it as their game of the year.

I don't agree, of course. Mass Effect 2 was way better. And if we want deep story and characterization there is also Red Dead Redemption which not only had better replay value but was miles better than Alan Wake.

Enh. I actually enjoyed Alan Wake quite a bit. The story was a little bit cliche at times, alot cliche at others - but the fact that it actually had a story from beginning to end without any slow points or repetitious backtracking really does say quite a bit. Most games seperate plot elements with long stretches of either mindless combat or exploration until you find the next keystone. Alan Wake actually kept the plot moving no matter what you were doing, and combat seemed almost ancillary.
The game mainly suffered from, as stated, being released too late and far too many technical bugs and odd camera decisions. The driving segment was pretty much pointless, too.

It's certainly in my top 5 for this year.Rest are Bad Company 2(I look at it as multiplayer only),Starcraft 2,Mass Effect 2 and Red Dead Redemption.Altough I already stated that I wasn't most satisfied with RDR.

at least it wasn't farmville or some other gawd-awful piece of crap
Cheddar [mail] Dec 15 2010, 01:45 pm EST
The day Farmville wins GotY is the day I light my computer and console on fire and go live as a quaker.

Count me in the day Farmville wins GotY is the day gaming is over. Its going to happen I know it is.

How can it be GOTY if it was only on one platform?
  Cheddar: A fair question, actually.
thestewieman: Microsoft paid where the other didn't.

Time shmime. I've never even heard about this game. Exclusive to the Phantom did you say ?
jules11788 [mail] Dec 15 2010, 06:46 pm EST
since when did Time magazine's opinion on videogames matter? last time i checked, they covered news and politics
now if it was OXM or something like that giving Alan Wake GotY, that might be a different story
Darkthor [mail] Dec 16 2010, 05:51 am EST
a very fair pick,i must say...chilling game,well deserved it....
