Today's Controversy: IGDA Releases Warning over Amazon Appstore Distribution Terms
Jackson "Smapdey" Johns
11:35 pm EDT @ April 18th, 2011
Amazon recently launched its very own Android Appstore, creating another player in the digital distribution market, currently dominated by Steam and Apple. The International Game Developers Association has released an "Important Advisory" regarding Amazon's terms of distribution for this Appstore. The agreement is full of price controls, and pressures to be exclusive to Amazon. The long and the short of it is that Amazon is clearly taking somewhat aggressive steps to become a leader in the field of digital distribution through their agreements with developers.
A lot of people probably think that this is a dick move from Amazon, which is understandable. But they're also trying to break into the market, and business is largely made up of dicks. So it doesn't seem that bad, just another dick move in a long chapter of dick moves, filling a book of dick moves called, "The Most Dickest Moves, Volume MMCCLVII".
Of course, I usually read agreements before I sign them or avoid signing them at all if I can, since exploitation is the hallmark of the American business landscape and signing your name is when you stick your head in their invisible bear trap. That's why I use a fake name.
You can read more, like the specifics of the advisory back at that link over there.

Reply This isn't Amazon just being a dick to get into a tough market, this is Amazon being Amazon. They do the same with books, in which they obviously dominate online -- in that case, they're trying to take overall market share from physical stores. |

Reply Amazon better not drive Steam out of business. I've got a ton of Steam games! |
