Ubi's New PC DRM Will Cause Headaches, Big Headaches
PC Gamer reports on the status of the PC edition of Assassin's Creed II, which relies on Ubisoft's brand new DRM system, which we've reported about earlier. According to the report, this particular brand of DRM is one of the worst you're about to lay your hands on. In future, while playing Ubi's games, you need an active Internet Connection at all times. The game immediately quits if the Internet Connection is lost (???). In other words, your game quits and you lose progress.

For a game that doesn't even have an online component, well not yet at least (maybe with the upcoming multiplayer modes and shit... but still, c'mon guys, this is too much).

Here's the word: "We've just received Assassin's Creed 2 and Settlers VII for review, and verified with Ubisoft that the DRM is the same as the boxed product. If you get disconnected while playing, you're booted out of the game. All your progress since the last checkpoint or savegame is lost, and your only options are to quit to Windows or wait until you're reconnected."

"The game first starts the Ubisoft Game Launcher, which checks for updates. If you try to launch the game when you're not online, you hit an error message right away. So I tried a different test: start the game while online, play a little, then unplug my net cable. This is the same as what happens if your net connection drops momentarily, your router is rebooted, or the game loses its connection to Ubisoft's 'Master servers'. The game stopped, and I was dumped back to a menu screen - all my progress since it last autosaved was lost."

That settles it, I'm pirating this game.
Fucking retards.
Alchi Feb 18 2010, 04:25 am EST
Oh I'm gonna laugh to death when someone finally cracks this one.
People will pirate it, just to avoid this ridiculous DRM.

AC2 will fail massively because of this DRM.
Un Om Bun [STAFF] Feb 18 2010, 04:30 am EST
Crack, crack. LOL. Crack. Fuck Ubi.

Alchi: You cracked me up un.

I can smell a ShitStorm coming dwoards Ubisoft. WTF is up with that kind of ''protection''. I like to play games when I'm bored. As it happens I'm usually bored as hell, when I DONT have a internet connection.
If I have a connection, I spend most of the time on ActionTrip, which is allways fun :P
Fuckd__4_Life Feb 18 2010, 04:42 am EST
I am positive that Ubisoft and others who develop their own brand of DRM purposefully makes them as annoying as the 9 circles of hell, because any man with half of a brain can understand that the method sucks, just so to sabotage the PC gaming platform as a whole.

Gamers fed up of PC gaming's annoyances will guarantee a look at the consoles for respite. Console hardware sales shots up, console game sales shots up, developers can opt out of making PC games, consoles have far lesser piracy rates = more profit.

If this trend continues, PC gaming WILL die. The next generation of consoles, with higher power and more juice will absolutely finish of PC gaming. The end nigh, friends.

Fuck Ubisoft.

They are brave, have they already forgotten what happen when they used Star force?
adfoam Feb 18 2010, 05:14 am EST
isnt this the same shit Bioware pulled with 10 days checking internet server for Mass Effect PC version until the playerbase revolted and they changed it.
Vader [STAFF] Feb 18 2010, 05:15 am EST
Similar. Not the same, but similar. BioWare didn't go this far in the end. Ubisoft is taking an awful risk, should they decide to go ahead with this retarded scheme.

Lost internet connection = booted from game!? What a bunch of bullshit, no one will buy Ubi's games now. I'm all for legit gaming, but this new DRM is really pushing it. Everyone's internet connection goes down sometimes, those crazy bastards at Ubisoft need to take a class in common sense!
tarang231994: agreed my isp is good but at night it gets disconnect…
SGMRock Feb 18 2010, 05:51 am EST
Ya like Vader said. Bioware only did a internet check every 10 days. As long as you had internet every 10 days you were good. Shoot you coulda used a dial in modem account for that. But to actually kick you out of the game if your internet connection drops for any reason while your playing is just totally nuts.
Vycka Feb 18 2010, 06:09 am EST

I enjoy gaming when not online. Why is Ubisoft always the ones to push the limits when it comes to screwing the public gamer. I have been staying clear of them for a while ever since Starforce. I thought they got it when they dropped that but I was wrong.

This doesn't fight pirates but encourages people to pirate.
Supcic Feb 18 2010, 08:01 am EST
Who in their right mind is going to put down $60 for this invasive shit?
It's like they intentionally want this game to bomb.
Mr. Furious Feb 18 2010, 08:20 am EST
This is the reason why I download most games, because of fucking assholes like that who can think they can force anyone to take their shit and not complain.

This game will DEFFINATELY be cracked by one of the top sceeners and when it is, I'll be one of the first to get it and laugh at these fucking french retards.

I live in Montreal and can call Ubisoft locally because their office is located on St. Laurent Street. So I think I'll give them a call and scream at those frenchie bastards.

ok i will not pass on AC II

i will pirate it or maybe buy it for the ps3
Kurio Feb 18 2010, 09:25 am EST
Hmmm... couldnt care less, what was the last Ubisoft game i played?
Rayman 3d?
Its wrong by principle though, i mean i have wireless net and it breaks time to time, up to 2 times a day, njothing much its for like 1minute untill it reconnects, but that would be enough to loose all progress if im not saving all the time?
sounds harsh...
Baulderan Feb 18 2010, 09:47 am EST
Um.... Wow, really? REALLY?! Please PLEASE tell me it's going to be different if I buy it through Steam.
FroZeNSouL Feb 18 2010, 10:55 am EST
lol u guys obviously dont bother with GFWLive then.
Dam Halo2 did the same when trying to get achievements. Constantly saying my save game didnt match up to the servers :S
Vader [STAFF] Feb 18 2010, 12:03 pm EST
Who the hell played Halo 2 on Vista?
Alchi: I played it on XP. Eat that MS.
barasawa Feb 18 2010, 12:31 pm EST
I wonder how long before someplace like gamecopyworld has a patch to remove that garbage, or maybe a pseudo-proxy ubi-server to fool the software.
Whos_the_Who Feb 18 2010, 02:33 pm EST
Hahaha, this will lead to the creation of games where the protection only makes it worse for the people who buy them. I remember the issue with Bioshock and the limited installs, well that wasn't true to the people who downloaded a cracked version of the game. In all honesty I think companies would make more money if they didnt bother with stupid protection like this. Not only would they not have to waste time on making the protection but more people would be attracted to buying the game knowing they aren't getting gypped with some crap protection like limited installs. That being said, I think its still reasonable to have online play protection so that people are still forced to buy a game if they are serious about it (which they would do anyway).
Breedy_Mcfluff Feb 18 2010, 02:53 pm EST
Man, they really suck dick. Chaos Theory was awful and now it gets worse.

Piracy, here we come!
EricktheRed Feb 18 2010, 02:56 pm EST
Just looking through my game collection on my desk, and the only Ubisoft game I have is Dragon's Lair 3D. I guess that says something about my distaste of Ubisoft already.
Tastysanchez Feb 18 2010, 03:16 pm EST
I normally side with developers and yell at pirates but this... This makes me want to pirate! Fuck you Ubisoft, I'm trying to stop piracy and your making me want to pirate just out of anger!
tei187 Feb 18 2010, 03:17 pm EST
high five for a stupid fucking idea!

is this the part when cracks actually do make sense and will be even more popular in search engines than the game itself?
tei187: see this? i've replied myself, yey! :P lol
Jedrus Feb 18 2010, 03:34 pm EST
So they’re trying to tell me not to buy their games?
No problem, there are so many other games to choose from nowadays.

At least they give you a fair warning way in advance.
Oh, and if by any chance they want to really sell their product, here is the formula: Keep the DRM shit out of your games and lower the prices; you’ll be swimming in mula in no time.
You welcome Ubi.
tei187 Feb 18 2010, 05:47 pm EST
hmm... i wonder what will happen if you get tons of lag... an error message saying 'dude, you're connection is shitty'?
albundyhere Feb 18 2010, 07:03 pm EST
cRaCk DaT sHiT! the wont realize that a majority of their players will be pirates! LOFL! There is no winning a pirate battle. History proves it...even in Somalia!
tarang231994 Feb 18 2010, 07:18 pm EST
the devs. of AC series should change their publisher coz by now m sure no one will buy AC II on PC
Superastic: AC2 is developed by Ubisoft :|
JamesPC Feb 18 2010, 07:31 pm EST
What did we legit gamers do to deserve such DRM? I'm so mad at Ubi, I could breathe fire!
tarang231994: good but this may be better all the ppl involved in…
JamesPC: I might buy AC2 on the PS3.
KeepSmilin Feb 18 2010, 08:36 pm EST
I blame the americans for allowing corporates to foster the culture of rampant copyright management. Ars technica reports that next major target is Canada. The land rife with villany known as piracy!
thestewieman Feb 18 2010, 11:34 pm EST
consoles are still worse.
Sleepy_Foot_Rulz Feb 19 2010, 12:27 pm EST
Ah this brings back sweet memories of the Amazing Adventures of 'Butterboy' and the Uncrackable 'Online encrypted' Half Life 2.....

Dunno if this can be cracked or not, but its surely going to put off a lot of legitimate
PC gamers, and I believe that the loss of potential customers (thus revenues) will outweigh whatever gain they think they will get from putting this protection on their game.
CannibalBob Feb 26 2010, 11:58 am EST
I don't get it. AC2 is hardly a "laptop" game that you'd play on a plane, train or whatnot, where internet connectivity is scarce/expensive. This is a type of game you'd play at home where internet connectivity is common. If your internet is down then, well, you've got bigger problems than "AC2 doesn't work".

I do agree though that closing the game upon connection loss is a bit harsh. Perhaps they will improve it to be a bit more lenient - perhaps it should pause the game with a message, and allow you to save your progress? It will be the first release so chances are Ubisoft will improve it.

The real question is whether or not this DRM will be effective and/or hard to crack. If pirates get a hard time then, imo, it will be worth it. PC gaming is suffering because pirating is so easy and some developers are moving on, believing PC development is "not worth it". PC gaming needs a hard/impossible to crack DRM to bring developers back.
