Ubisoft Drops 'Constant Internet Connection' DRM
Filed under: UBISOFT, DRM, PC GAMING

Here's a bit of interesting news you may have missed during the Holidays. Word has it that an active Internet connection is no longer required to play Ubisoft games.

PC Gamer UK reports that the French publisher released an update that removes the necessity for some of Ubi's games to have an Internet connection in order to be played.

Basically, this means that games like Assassin's Creed 2 and for Splinter Cell: Conviction can be enjoyed and played offline without a hitch. Of course, you are still required to have an Internet connection to authenticate when the game boots.

Yes, this is nice news. A bit late, Ubi, but nice.

Why design a game that requires constant internet connection unless it's online MP only. It just needlessly aggravates anyone who temporarily loses their link. I genuinely don't understand why they ever did this.
un om bun: Because they're French.
Doomsday.: Aaah yesz! Ze Frenchz!!

Good news, they finally realized their mistake.
Unless the neir next copyprotection is having a frenchman watching you every time you want to play the game.

Well that's a surprise. I thought they'll stick with it and call it 'a matter of national pride' .
Cause as un said, they're french and they don't give in to demands of other people.
Ask gypsies.

tei187: it wasn't piracy. it was an act of rebellion ;) YAAAARRRRRR...

Even if you have to connect to the net just to authenticate the game, that's still having a constant internet connection. With their decision, that means you now always have to either disable your Local Area Connection or pull the cable from your modem. It's Starcraft 2 all over again.

If I'm on a single player game, even a net connection to start the game is too much. If I don't have a constant connection, I probably don't have any connection at all, like when I'm traveling. You'd be amazed how many hotels don't have a real connection available, and that's not even mentioning the difficulties when in a moving vehicle. (No, not while driving, only when a passenger.)

This is basically putting a bandaid on a leper, too little, too late, and still just as undesirable.
tei187: then download the crack when you're connection is on just li...
barasawa: I usually do, but my circumvention of them screwing doesn't ...

I'm glad Ubisoft finally came to their senses. Now I can buy Assassin's Creed 2 for PC.

after the initial authentication ..no internet should be needed to play a single player game. Still not buying any ubisoft game till they make it right
Supcic [mail] Jan 04 2011, 12:07 pm EST
You still need to connect to the internet everytime you want to play the game. This shit doesn't change a fucking thing. One authentication should be enough. Ubisoft won't be seeing any money from in the near future. I shall still "acquire" your games though.
