Unreal 4 Engine for Nex-Gen Consoles

During the Tokyo Game Show, Epic Games president Mike Capps explained that if there's a third title in the company's Gears of War series, it will be for new consoles, which probably won't appear for at least another four years. What's more, they've confirmed their plans to release Unreal Engine 4 for the next generation of console hardware. Mind you, they're still vague on the subject.

"We're very concerned that the next generation will be massively parallel and most engines won't be able to adapt for that," said Capps. "If there were a next Gears of War, that will be for the next console generation, whenever that is. If someone knows, please tell me! That's about four or five years away, I think."

Yes, that about sums it up. Didn't think we'd see a new generation of consoles for at least three years, but it looks as though developers expect it even later.

do you work in game development or marketing ? right, then shut up.

you can’t be sure of how much time a product stays alive.
it depends on how much a previous project kept the interest, how much dependability it had, performance etc.

new PC specs are surfacing every day at your local store.

the Wii will soon be canned and replaced and i think so will the other consoles because of the price dropping. once everyone has it, BOOM ! you need something new.

Four years is a stretch. From what I've read so far, 2012-2013 is most likely, or late 2011. Or we'll know more about the next-gen consoles in late 2011, probably announcements of what the consoles will be.

Seems Project Natal might be big for next-gen and Sony is definitely not going to fuck up the PS4's price again after what happened.

An announcement in 2011? Hm, maybe, but that's as far as it goes for now. The launch of new consoles won't occur until 2013. That's my bet.

2013 is really far away man...my bet is far away 2012....or late 2011

@ Doomsday

Do you have any idea how much money Sony lost developing the PS3. They still have to make up for lost ground. Financially, they are in no position to create brand new console hardware. The only company with enough resources to develop a new console right now is probably Nintendo. MS also invested plenty of cash into the retarded Natal thing.

My guess is 2012 at the earliest. As more gamers lose their jobs, the gaming industry will lose money. No one will bring out a new console until the economy completely recovers.

They're still making games for the ps2. It isn't the hardware that are limiting game development, it is the creativity of the developers.
thestewieman: creativity has zero to do with it.
thestewieman [mail] Sep 25 2009, 06:45 am EDT
the wii single handedly expanded the lifespan of the PS2.
allot of games are coming to the PS2 because it's like printing free money, as most wii games use last-gen game engines which also already function on the PS2.
and also a ton of PSP titles are very simple to convert to running on the PS2.

it has nothing to do with creativity it's pure business! as i said printing free money...
  SpaceMonkey: You sir, are delusional.
thestewieman: and you are a moron! it's profit sucker!
Cheddar: I think stewie actually has a point here.

Honestly, I'm surprised we won't see another Gears of War title for the Xbox 360, considering how well the franchise has done for it. Gears of War 2's Horde mode is certainly my current favourite Multiplayer mode via Xbox LIVE, though I haven't had a lot of time to spend with Halo 3: ODST's Firefight yet.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if Microsoft Game Studios pressures Epic Games to make another Gears of War sooner. Come to think of it, it was officially said that the latest novel, Gears of War: Jacinto's Remnant, bridges the gap between Gears of War 2 and Gears of War 3.

Oh, and for perhaps the first time in ActionTrip history, the stewieman and I agree on something: The games industry is, like any other business, all about generating profit (and the current bastardization of the DLC market is an excellent example of this).

The fact that games and the industry often, though not always, entertain us is nothing more than a by-product of the nature of the industry itself.

4 or 5 years for a game engine making company is fuck all. They'll need all that time just to figure out there parallel processing code properly for the next gen which will have god knows how many cores.
I'm surprised at the idea of not having a 3rd gears come out for 360 though, i figured they were in full on milkage mode now.
cocoliso [mail] Sep 25 2009, 03:21 pm EDT
@insanepotato i couldn't agree more, i mean gears of war has been probably the only successful game from epic in a long time...odd that they aren't milking it since they practically killed the UT series with their last game
Cheddar [mail] Sep 25 2009, 03:35 pm EDT
One stumble does not a dead franchise make... and particularly not when it's one as storied as Unreal Tournament.

If Epic wants to revitalize UT with a new installment, they can, and they can do so easily. They'll just have to create a real single-player campaign to go with the multiplayer component this time, and the two GoW games prove that they can do that well enough.

Epic willl release something new before this console generation ends. It might be a new UT game, or it might be a new IP, but it'll come.

Too bad Gears of War 3 won't be on the 360. I wonder if MS will force Bioware to push Mass Effect 3 back to the next console too?
thestewieman [mail] Sep 26 2009, 08:05 am EDT
Terminator, Bioware is owned by EA now, Mass effect 2 and 3 will be cross-platform "aka PC".

anyone who buys that game on any console should be shot on the spot!
just like people who buy Alpha Protocol on anything except the PC, i shoot u :)

Loraxxe [mail] Sep 26 2009, 02:52 pm EDT
Vodoo, MS and Sony gain little from releasing a new console. They always lose money on the consoles, and make it back on the game licensing. So unless they can suddenly make more on licensing by edging out the used game market, or the market needs a graphical refresh to avoid atrophy, they are just going to license away. And while Blu-Ray is probably enough capacity for the next-gen, for processing they're probably going to wait for system-on-a-chip solutions (CPU, GPU, Northbridge, Southbridge, maybe even sound) to save costs. That's my bet.
