World of Darkness MMO Laid Off with Employees

World of Darkness, an MMO based off of White Wolf's horror tabletop games, has been canceled due to layoffs of CCP studio. CCP CEO Hilmar Veigar Petrusson posted the following statement on CCP's website:

The decision to end the World of Darkness MMO project is one of the hardest I’ve ever had to make. I have always loved and valued the idea of a sandbox experience set in that universe, and over the years I’ve watched the team passionately strive to make that possible.

I would like to give special thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make the World of Darkness MMO a reality, especially the team members affected by this decision. Their considerable contribution to CCP will not be forgotten, and we wish them well.

To our current and former employees and fans of World of Darkness, I am truly sorry that we could not deliver the experience that we aspired to make. We dreamed of a game that would transport you completely into the sweeping fantasy of World of Darkness, but had to admit that our efforts were falling regretfully short. One day I hope we will make it up to you.

Although this was a tough decision that affects our friends and family, uniting the company behind the EVE Universe will put us in a stronger position moving forward, and we are more committed than ever to solidify EVE as the biggest gaming universe in the world.

Fifty-six employees lost their jobs today, and those who remain have been placed in other Eve projects.

“We overreached with World of Darkness in its initial concept, wanting to achieve too much in the first go,” CCP told GamesBeat. “While we have adjusted scope numerous times along the way, the outcome is neither true to the original concept nor to a concept that would have been much more focused from the start. We wanted to create a sweeping, immersive experience, and we didn’t get there. In our assessment, it’s best to put an end to the project over retrofitting it more.”

Well, while I think it's a shame, and it could have been a wonderful gaming experience, I'm glad they did *this*, instead of releasing something half-finished/shitty.

I'm looking at *you*, every other half-assed, AAA redux/reboot in the past couple years.

Fifty six people out of a job.

Reminder that this world sucks ass in a huge way.

My condolences to everyone out of work. Hope they find new jobs.

It's all relative, I'm pretty sure many more kids starved to death yesterday, or lost their lives digging for some stupid shiny glass rocks in some cave.

The recession will continue to push its thumb up their asses it seems.

Eve was the first MMO I tried, and the amount of work and effort invested in it is incredible. After some post-beta problems stemming from the team's lack of experience, I've watched them improve their company policies year after year. Their desire to please the community and playerbase has only increased as well. At one point they instituted the Council of Stellar Management, basically a team of player-elected players who are given a strong role in shaping the future of the game.

When I heard of the total screwup with the banks in Iceland I felt outraged. Those people were projecting an image of a near-utopian society. Now half of them are jobless.

Humanity really needs a kick in the nuts. Where the hell's my extinction-level event already?
