» All About Still Life on ActionTrip

Apart from standard conversation with characters, (meaning that you usually ask questions and they answer them -duh) there are some instances in the game where it's possible to apply a professional or personal line of talk.

NPCs can also give you objects which are important for solving puzzles in the game. It is possible to view all these objects in your 3D inventory. This is important as failing to rotate the object so as to get a better angle on it may sometimes prevent you from solving the puzzle.

The puzzles are all conceived in a very logical and intelligent manner. They are not abstract or pointless as they make an integral part of the investigation process. Clues needed for solving the puzzles are always nearby, so all you have to do is use it in the right place. This sounds fairly simple, but the complexity of the puzzles progresses with time. Initial puzzles are fairly simple, but later on in the game you will get to solve puzzles that require serious brainstorming. Some puzzles are based on combining several elements and trying out different combinations, while others consist of searching for the hidden detail which is the key to solving the puzzle. The puzzles sometimes succeed in confusing you, which results in your persistent ignoring of the most obvious thing. They seem very fitting for this type of game, as they are in accord with the general grim atmosphere of murder and suspense.

The audio and the graphics both succeed in upping the tension and making the whole situation more realistic and believable. The game features full-voiced dialogues that are well written, with (mostly) excellent voiceovers to cover them. On the visual side, Still Life is a combination of 2D and 3D graphics, with 2D backgrounds and well-incorporated 3D objects. Some advanced effects are also present, such as real-time shadows and such. The entire game is done in a rather grim, dark tone, with lots of detail and a great number of diverse settings. Although the game brings some rather gory and unpleasant scenes and features lots of cursing and foul language, this doesn't become too vulgar or inappropriate in any moment (Unless you are under the age of 13 -Ed).

I found this grim-looking adventure rather involving and exciting and from what I've seen so far, it seems the right atmosphere has been created, with cleverly written dialogue, some intelligent and enjoyable puzzles, cinematic cut-scenes, great characterization and, of course, a story full of drama, suspense and blood. I have no concerns about Microid's competence when it comes adventure games, so I am looking forward to this one. Still Life is scheduled for release in April this year.
