Lara Croft's Sexiness Not Helping Eidos
Filed under: LARA CROFT, EIDOS, GAME SALES

British publisher Eidos Interactive didn't quite reach the sales figures predicted by the company a while back. As it turns out, Tomb Raider: Underworld (released last year for the PC, Xbox 360, PS3 and Nintendo DS) has not sold as much as Eidos anticipated.

TR: Underworld sold an estimated 1.5 million units worldwide, albeit they've described the as sales disappointing. "On a global basis our sell through to 31 December, which we estimate at approximately 1.5 million units, is below our internal forecasts, primarily due to a lower start in North America," said Eidos.

Eidos lowered its full year revenue estimates to between GBP 160 million – GBP 180 million, compared to the previously estimated GBP 180 million – GBP 200 million.

Once news got out that Eidos is lowering revenue forecast, the publisher's stock plummeted by 25% after the markets opened this morning. As GI reports, "the company's stock closed last night at 17.25 pence but opened this morning at 12.25 pence following the statement that revenues would be around GBP 20 million lower than expected."

I didn't mind the game but how can they expect to attract new buyers, or even hold on to past fans, when they fail to address virtually any of the issues that've been raised in past games.

Saints Row 2, for example, fixed a lot of issues people had with Saints Row and expanded on what people liked - not perfect but certainly kept the fans of the first game and attracted new fans. Sold a lot more than 1.5million iirc too :)

Sex HELP sell the game but the original tomb raider was a great game in itself without the sex. The market then was just getting used to 3D graphics and most of the stuff out there was crap.

Tomb raider then did everything right, from level design to mechanics. Even if they put a guy for the protagonist the game would still sell. The game today is just an average adventure with a porn star, it's only so long before the idea gets old.

I'm sorry, but Lara Croft is not worth paying $60 for her new game.

ummm...the problem is that she has too much clothes on her. less clothes = more sales.
