Manhunt 2 UK Ban Appeal Overturned by the High Court

Manhunt 2 continues its troublesome existence within the United Kingdom. First, the British Board of Film Classification bans the game in the UK, then the ban was overturned by appeal of the Video Appeals Committee and now that same appeal has been overturned by the High Court.

In an all-day hearing at the Royal Courts of Justice in London today, the Honourable Mr Justice Mitting sided with the BBFC's argument that the VAC (the original appellate committee) had erred when considering whether Manhunt 2 could be considered harmful to minors who viewed it. Whereas the VAC interpreted this as "actual harm," the BBFC and Mitting believed it should be taken in a broader scope of "potential harm and risk of harm." The BBFC also argued that the VAC based its decision on whether or not the game would have a "devastating effect on society," and argued that this "harm threshold" was too high.

Seven members of the VAC are know going to reconvene and make a new decision based on the guidelines issued by the judge. This will occur within the next two weeks and that could very well signify the end of this long-drawn out legal nightmare.

..whether Manhunt 2 could be considered harmful to minors who viewed it... what exactly is there to consider if the game is getting a rating of 18 anyway?

Rockstar are really into stirring up shit. It's their trademark and I bet they're mighty proud of themselves.

Hey man, I live in NZ and we can't get manhunt here. We have the same rigid classifications for games as the UK, but i managed to get hold of a copy (not saying how, oh damn do you have my IP address??).
I found it boring and repetitive, so i cannot really see why it has so many issues.
I have seen movies that are far worse that get thru. Look at any movie made by the BBC, they have full frontal male and female nudity in most of their movies, why can't you get a game with a bit of full frontal violence?

Yeah, I'd be more inclined to defend free speech and artistic expression if the game didn't blow. It's good that the BBFC is taking a stand on gratuitous violence and I fully agree with this High Court decision. This crap will invariably be purchased by many young minds that are incapable of separating fantasy from reality.

Sex doesn't hurt minds, murder without just rationalization does. What's wrong with being proactive?
