US Government to Track Terrorists Via World of Warcraft

A story on Wired says that the U.S. intelligence community plans to develop software for detecting "violent extremists infiltrating World of Warcraft and other massive multiplayer games, according to a data-mining report from the Director of National Intelligence." According to the report, the Reynard project starts by profiling online gaming behavior, after which it moves on to its primary objective - "automatically detecting suspicious behavior and actions in the virtual world."

Careful, the next time you stroll through the virtual worlds of WoW. You never know who might be watching or listening in.

What are the terrorists going to do? Kite dragons to Stormwind?
desi [mail] Feb 23 2008, 12:45 pm EST
We should give all terrorists free unlimited lifetime access to WoW. That'll make the (real) world a happier place to live in.

We all know that they just wanna play WoW :P

What the fuck is this shit? Is there some formula to detect terrorist behaviour? Do terrorists behave in specific ways when they play WoW?
Vader [STAFF] [mail] Feb 23 2008, 01:38 am EST
They do, evidently. Especially when it comes to loot, I hear.

Holy shit, the headline sounds like something out of the Onion. Guess it's not to much of a stretch for the world we live in.

Who hires the idiots who come up with moronic ideas like this? Oh, that's right. The politicians who promise to solve all our problems and instead create more.

King Speedy [mail] Feb 23 2008, 03:58 am EST
They should go on a Geddon run. Plenty of suicide bombers in my raid.
QuickBrownFox [mail] Feb 23 2008, 04:32 am EST
I think they must be talking about intercepting player's /tells or something and scanning them for key words or phrases.

Beats me what they think they'll accomplish... Im sure they'll find lots of anarchists and angry young men who like to talk big and make idle threats, but actually go through with them? please.

Tell me honestly that anyone who plays wow is going to have the free time to plot and carry out actual acts of terrorism, or that terrorists would really use an MMORPG to recruit / plan for terrorist attacks.

I wonder if the Vatican will pounce on me if I have a warlock running around in WOW?
Hitman [mail] Feb 23 2008, 06:05 am EST
Sounds about right to me since those fucking terrorists bastards recruit everywhere, even ingame.
camazotz [mail] Feb 23 2008, 07:02 am EST

un om bun [mail] Feb 23 2008, 02:36 am EST
Most incredibly retarded idea ever. I am now ashamed of being human.
tommo [mail] Feb 24 2008, 03:40 am EST
perhaps they think the terrorists are financing their anti-world activities through intricate arrangements based on gold farming.

Or perhaps not
Corpse Grinder [mail] Feb 24 2008, 08:16 am EST
I have this theory that all gnomes are infact terrorists
Anticitizen714 [mail] Feb 24 2008, 01:08 am EST
Nooo, we're not a police state at all.

Let's not do any real police work, let's just hunt for boogeymen in games.

This is just an excuse for bureaucrats to play WoW all day.
LynX [mail] Feb 24 2008, 04:54 am EST
So.... terrorists actually have so much time on their hands, aside from planning bombings and getting their daily dose of indoctrination........ to f***ing play WoW?

Riiiight.
Neil [mail] Feb 25 2008, 07:39 am EST
I'd imagine they'd try and spot if you were born in Dirka-Dirkastan, or live on Bakalakadaka Street?
