Other symptoms are "escaping problems through play," ignoring homework in order to play games and stealing money to buy more games (ah, that pretty much describes the days of my childhood).
NIMF regarded the study as a "a wake-up call for families." Others do not agree with that. ESA senior vice president of communications Rich Taylor said:
"Like all forms of entertainment, computer and video games should be a part of a well-rounded lifestyle that includes healthy eating and exercise. It is up to parents to determine when and how often their children should play any game. For our part, the industry already provides a wide range of tools and information, including timers and parental controls, to help caregivers ensure that entertainment software is used appropriately."

| Yep, it should like 85%, instead of 8.5. They worry, cause people addicted to games make poor commercial slaves. |

| Of course you escape problems by playing, just as people drink/do drugs or anything else to do it, the world isn't a very pretty place all of the time, I can't hold it against anybody if they want to escape from it sometimes. Although it can go to the extreme, my friend had an older brother who punched in a window and shit because they locked up out of the house so he couldn't play, it also happened that he "forgot" to go the the bathroom while playing, and he also "forgot" eating etc. sick stuff |

| I envy the little bastards. I don't know when's the last time I really got into a game. Nowadays it's just sweet memories and the daily dose of healthy negativity in here. But it's better than nothing. I say let them enjoy their addiction. They'll become serious, bitter adults soon enough. |

| I don't suppose they tried this same study with, just TV watching... or book reading? I do all of these things to "escape" my homework. | ||

| Not long ago, kids were "escaping" homework by going outside to play ball/climb trees/whatever. The little junkies! | ||

| ... and about 50 milliion people, if not more, in the US, are addicted to coffee, cigarettes, booze, crack or weed. And television. God, I hate the public's view on games and gamers. It's been around for 30 years, get over it. | ||

| 8.5? Bullshit, it's at least 40%. | ||

| And more adults play video games than kids. My parents once cut off my internet for 9 months when I got a B. Said most of the world doesn't have internet so I shouldn't, and barely anyone has cable (this was in 2004 or something). They also get pissed everytime I watch a cartoon because they still think only little kids watch them. I'm serious. I watched entire episodes of Family Guy, South Park, and Drawn Together in front of them and they never cared what was going on the screen. Fuck the media for brainwashing ignorant people but even this has some pros. |

| A few years back they also did a test with gamers and non-gamers; dexterity, alertness, and the sort. We kicked their asses, not to mention hand eye coordination and problem solving skills. I believe there is a thick line between addiction and just playing to have some fun, hell I don't get the DT's if I can't raid or quest, I just get pissed for paying 50-60bucks for games that have the lasting appeal of a Senior Citizen handjob. You can try to close your eyes and focus on the menial pleasure for a few minutes, but reality comes into when you're finish. |

| In a witch-hunt you are going to find a witch. That’s what this is. Everyone is looking to blame something or someone for poor parenting. It’s the fault of our schools… no wait, the food is responsible. Oh noooooo… it’s those gamers. They sit and “play”!!!! Aha! The 8.5% of kids from 8-18 years old are to blame for all of the ills of the world. “We don't need no education. We don't need no thought control. No dark sarcasm in the classroom. Teachers leave those kids alone. Hey, teacher leave those kids alone! All in all you're just another brick in the wall.” – Pink Floyd |

| Those 'symptoms' sound like normal teenagers with anything. Try those descriptions but replace the gaming stuff with other hobbies like TV, Comic Books, Baseball Cards, Rock and Roll, Cars, Goofing Off, Hanging at the Mall, Fishing, etc. Every Decade or so, a new diversion comes along that is greatly enjoyed by teenagers who don't want to do their homework, don't want to be bothered with real world issues, and just want to enjoy themselves. It's not going to go away, ever. All Gentile has succeeded in doing is identifying the obvious for this generation. So to Mr. Gentile I offer this great big DDDD U U H H D DD U U H H D D U U HHHH D DD U U H H DDDD UUUU H H Your bill for the cost of this Statement of the Obvious can be payed at the Homer Institute of General Smartinessitude, Springfield USA. |

| This actually brings up some very important questions. Namely: can any specific activity which causes you to procrastinate from your supposed “duties” be considered a “disorder”? I don’t see it this way at all. My personal opinion can best be summarized by the following: Procrastination is one of humanities greatest achievements over the animals. Where they are driven by instinct, we are driven by motivation—something we can easily resist. And with that in mind, this article is a load of bullshit. Comparing it to something which is physically addictive like Alcohol violates so many rules of logic I won’t even begin… |

| Right on the money with escaping problems through gaming. Honestly gaming is my daily release, sex and alcohol are also worthy nominees, so if I don't get some kind of daily dosage of gaming then I am a happy camper.. one hour or more preferably or else I am a walking time bomb. The day that my Fios goes down is the day that a building somewhere burns. | ||

| It's true that game can really entertain and add excitement o our life but this could be also a great problem. I remember my brother who is also a game addict. He just try to spend all his money for that games and sometimes skip his meal. I know my parents should be responsible for this. And i know they do everything just to stop my brother on his game bad habits. He didn't even remember that our time is really precious as wow gold .So Mr. ESA senior vice president, tell us how does this wide range of tools and information really can really help us? | ||
| Terminator | [mail] Apr 21 2009, 10:13 am EDT | |
| Your brother reminds me of myself, when I was a kid. I was hopelessly addicted to games, every free moment I had was spent playing them. Thankfully I am not that bad anymore. | ||
| Copperr | [mail] Apr 22 2009, 08:42 am EDT | |
| It's about youth , not frustrated fags who only come here to whine. It's better if they are addicted to games instead of alcohol and drugs. Sex and rock'n'roll (or whatever music is trendy today) are still okay. |
