Blizzard's Mystery MMO Based on New IP
It's more than likely Blizzard will unveil its new, mysterious MMOG during this year's BlizzCon. World of Warcraft creators have confirmed that this new project is based on an entirely new IP and not on any of the well-known company franchises.

"We've already stated it'll be a brand new franchise, which means the lore, art, and game play are being developed entirely from scratch," said Blizzard community manager Zarhym on the World of Warcraft forums, as reported by Worldofwar.net.

Yeah, we already know this. Also, Blizzard mentioned that the new MMOG is using the World of Warcraft engine for testing purposes. "It's an overwhelming process, but a process through which we excel," added Zerhym. "Our track record supports this."

Well, good luck, guys. Topping WoW, their own online masterpiece, won't be easy, even for them.

I trust that Blizz can make this good. Still though, something other than Diablo, Warcraft or Starcraft by Blizz sounds a bit... unnatural.
abi [mail] May 13 2009, 07:32 am EDT
well maybe they just need to rip off ideas and concepts of some other game or something. most of the games are just rips neway,,im sure just some features here and there,,,nothing special abt games these days.

Screw the new IP,,,will they be done just releasing the diablo 3 already lol
Terminator [mail] May 13 2009, 07:35 am EDT
I guess this means Blizz will NEVER make Warcraft 4, dammit!
Pantsoffski [mail] May 13 2009, 08:12 am EDT
They WON'T be aiming at "topping" WoW with this new IP (MMO product). They are clever enough to not kick themselves in the nuts / or simply to not mix the 2 products in the same "pot".

I am sure their marketing out-of-this-world-beings composed of team has considered and re-re-considered this issue. And I bet my grandma's balls that they have the perfect solution for this.

I gotta agree with Pantoffski, it would be pointless of them to even try taking customers from WoW let alone topping it. You don't make money by taking it out of your own pocket and at the end of the day that's what companies want.

Which leads me to believe that we might actually see a new setting from Blizzard outside of their typical fantasy type lore. They'll be looking to try and take some of the crowd that hates WoW and draw them into a different setting.
They may still prove me wrong and go with another typical fantasy setting we're used to seeing from MMO's but time will tell.

MMOs can go to Hitman 's avatar pic!
WereGerbel [mail] May 13 2009, 09:01 am EDT
Good points all around, and by the Gaming Gods(Steve&Lyle) it's high time for another soul sucking MMO. Im really interested as to what they are planning, it's risky, and when it was first mentioned I scoffed like a Brit.
Copperr [mail] May 13 2009, 11:09 am EDT
Where the fuck is World of Starcraft ?!
vikasreddyd [mail] May 13 2009, 11:33 am EDT
Blizzard has a lot of money and knows more about the MMO industry than any other game out right now. WoW is good but I bet there are a lot of things they wanted (or want to change) about the gameplay mechanics, etc. - but it would be too much work and will look like a "Combat Upgrade" (people who played swg know).

The new MMO would consolidate everything they learned in the past decade. The Blizz devs praised the Bioware devs when they saw TOR. So this is their counterattack.

I'm just hoping Blizz deviates from the whole PG13 crap. It should be Age of Conan x2 and most of the violence should be psychological. Kinda like Diablo when it first came out. Blizz devs called their new MMO: "It's gonna be different."

I just hope it's something NON-fantasy related[goddamn dwarfs...drunken bastards]

Unless they include some kind of virtual BJ, I’m not paying monthly fee for any game.
Cheddar [mail] May 13 2009, 09:47 am EDT
So, Blizzard's too pussy to try and create their first new IP in more than a decade for any genre other than the safest and most fiscally exploitable of all genres.

Logically, it makes sense. Can't deny that. The only issue is that Blizzard really has too much talent to be so unambitious. Look at studios like Ubisoft Montreal and Valve -- are they making MMOGs with their new IPs? Nope. And that's because they actually have pride, and are seeking to challenge themselves and bring further progress to the overall industry. Unlike Blizzard, apparently.

Ah, well, in the event that the MMOG is successful, perhaps then they'll grow the balls necessary to branch out with that IP into more meaningful genres. One can only hope.

How about World of Madmen? 1960's Madison Ave advertising MMO? PvP will be fighting each other to sleep with the newest secretary.

Or World Of NCIS? World of Lost? World of Chuck? I've got an old TV Guide here, people, I can go ALL DAY.

cybergod [mail] May 13 2009, 11:35 am EDT
I think it's safe to say that because they're running this game on the WoW engine for testing purposes, we won't see any announcement about it perhaps until 2010 Blizzcon at LEAST. Also, just look at how old World Of Warcraft is. It's a loosely developed game now because new content has been thrown everywhere. That means we can expect great things for the new MMO, it will more than likely blow everyones minds to the same effect Diablo 3 had. Nobody expected them to take the standard RPG recipe to the next level like that.
