Sony President Predicts End of PC Gaming

In this week's edition of German magazine Der
Spiegel, Phil Harrison, president of Sony Computer Entertainment's Worldwide
Studios, addresses the issue of Sony's alleged copying of the Wii motion-sensitive
controller with their own PS3 tilt-sensitive controller, but what's even more
precious is Phil's prediction that PS3 will literally kill the PC as a gaming
platform:
Besides defending the PS3, Harrison took time to evangelize the device, which will launch worldwide this November. In particular he said the Linux-based operating system on the console's hard drive will have enough processing power and non-gaming functionalities to render traditional PCs--most of which use a form of Microsoft's Windows OS--moot in the home. "We believe that the PS3 will be the place where our users play games, watch films, browse the Web, and use other [home] computer functions," said Harrison. "The PlayStation 3 is a computer. We do not need the PC."
Phil, baby, do you know how many people are gaming/browsing the net for porn/gaming at work? Phil... baby... are they gonna have PS3s at work? Am I gonna be able to work in Photoshop, download porn, movies AND play games on the PS3 while chatting with my friend WITH A FUCKING KEYBOARD? Phil, seriously. Drugs. Bad.

| Sony is being a complete idiot with the PS3 and the comments they always make..........They just think that everyone will follow them and do what ever they say............So if PS3 does replace the PC like they think, then I guess the PS3 is a disposable PC since you can not upgrade it.......Sound like some of the old Packard Bell PC's back in the day..........LOL | ||

| I would love to replace my PC with a PS3 once it comes out. Seriously, who needs a PC when you have something as powerful and multi-purpose as PS3? You can watch movies, surf the internet, and play some kick ass games! Not to mention how Photoshop, Painter, Dreamweaver, 3DS Max are all going to run so great on PS3! And modding the case or OC your CPU/GPU is totally possible and does not void any warranty and fully supported by Sony! I can burn all my Powerpoint slide shows with PS3, too! And you bet I will store all 120 GB of pictures and videos on my PS3 when it comes out! | ||

| Hah. So maybe people should quit with the conspiracy theories citing Microsoft as the one who wants to do away with PC gaming. Anyway, Harrison can dream on. Unless he's a total lackwit, he has to know his overpriced PS3 is poised to lose this console generation, and may even have trouble beating Nintendo, depending on whether or not the Wii lives up to its apparent potential. Harrison's just doing that typical kind of propagandic evangelizing people do to lend support to themselves when they're starting to get worried. |

| Guess what Phil....I have no interest in the PS3 at all for even a gaming platform. I personally find nothing of interests about it and the blu ray is a non issue. I do not need a multi-service device as I buy my console for one thing...to play console games. I think the next gen I am going Wii and maybe add a 360 when they come down a bit. Or maybe just a Wii and a PS2 would be fine since I skipped that one totally. I have a GC and a DS and a powerful pc so I do not need a PS3. Sony can bit me. |

| I seem to remember one of the biggest complainest about the seXBOX was that it was "too much of a computer, not enough of a gaming console". Now Sony wants to claim the PS3 is a computer? | So is Sony saying that the PS3 will be backwards compatible with Windows, DOS, Apple and Linux and all of their associated applications all the while remaining a superior gaming machine at a relative low price.....I thnk not. Will I be abe to rip my DVDs and CDs to back them up and be able to do audio mixes and video editing on them with my PS3...I highly doubt it. Will all current closed-source and open-source software be compatible with he PS3....I think not. Will I be to Partition my Hard Drive on my PS3 as well as hook up my camcorder to transfer and edit my home movies....I think not. Will I be able to multiboot my PS3 to run Windows, Linux, and other Operating Systerms if I see fit and not some half-assed Linux-like software that is only compatible witht he PS3?......I think not. Will I be able to transfer files from my Linux PC to the PS3....I have my doubs. So how is the PS3 like a PC or a MAC or anything like a multi-tasking computer again? |
