Sony PS3 Phantom Price Cut
As our reader, Cheddar, pointed out, this is a rather amusing development in regards to Sony's phantom PS3 price cut (I just used "phantom" and "PS3" in the same sentence, the irony is almost palpable). Essentially, the announced a price cut and later just spinned it into "same price with added value." Here's what other industry big names had to say about Sony's "price cut":

Although Peter Moore is the Corporate Vice President for Sony's rival, Microsoft's Xbox division, but his comments regarding Sony's recent North American $100 price cut seems genuinely insightful. "I didn't see a price cut, and I must have been reading the wrong thing. It's still USD 499 and USD 599", said Moore. "They've added greater value at the same prices. Which to me is not a price cut", he added.

"I don't want to be anal, but I read "price cut" and I expected to see USD 399," Peter Moore continued, "When I hear the words "price cut" I expect to see a price cut".

Moore's opinion is shared by Capcom Chief Financial Officer Kazuhiko Abe, who expects Sony to cut PS3's price again before 2008. the price has been cut once and it is likely to be cut again towards the end of the year. I expect the (PS3's) installed base to grow gradually", said Abe.

To be fair to Sony, however, one shouldn't take Peter Moore too seriously -- not after he called Vista the "most gamer-friendly operating system." No, sir.

Aren't they ceasing production of the 60gb models too? If so then this means the Ps3 will actually be more expensive after this 'price cut'. Sure, you get more for your money, but the entry price to the world of PS3 games hasn't decreased at all.

And since i don't know too much about the PS3.. what do you actually get with the 80gb PS3? The extra storage capacity isn't worth that much so what do you get for your money?

PS3 is shit. About time people realize this.
Killer Klown [mail] Jul 16 2007, 11:35 am EDT
Yeah, we're dropping the price of this here model, and introducing a new higher end model at it's old price. Oh, by the by, we're discontinuing the first model three days before the price drop kicks in.

I hope Kazuhiko Abe is right about Sony cutting the PS3's price again before 2008. Even the die-hard Sony fanboys are having trouble paying so much money for a PS3.

Well, like the article in the link says, lots of people still think that regardless of this obnoxious bait-and-switch-esque move by Sony, the PS3 will receive a permanent 100 dollar price cut by Christmas.

I personally don't think it'll happen by then, I still expect it to be in 2008. But we'll see. No doubt, the PS3 really, really needs to have a successful holiday season, so if Sony can afford to slash the price that early, they certainly will.

Windows Vista is only friendly to the gamers who own no games.
Cheddar [mail] Jul 16 2007, 07:21 am EDT
Even that's debatable.

It’s little unfair to us who bought PS3 earlier this year (in my case in early December last year) but right now I’m really enjoying my Ps3 so that’s ok. However, one thing I don’t understand is how and why some people can still come up with the argument that “Ps3 is still expensive”. Well, what are you comparing PS3 to? Xbox? Let’s see.

My PlayStationNetwork, which is the online PS3 community, is “Free”, all you need is a connection and there you go! Once online you can download free games or pay as less as 10 $ to download games. Is XboxLive free too? Beside PS3 can play BlueRay; that itself is 700 $ player.

Now what pisses me off is those Euro-gamers who complain about the price. Goddamn it, you guys get a PS3 with 2 controllers and a game. That’s more than 120 dollars off the price right there. Here in Canada you have to pay 56$ just for a controller and 70$ for a game (plus tax).

All being said, I am extremely satisfied with my PS3 and the upcoming games for ps3. Lair and heavenly swords are coming in a month. But with totally-fair-and-unbiased people like 2lions here who don’t miss an opportunity to say “Fuck You” to Sony and its owners, we are going to see shit load of more “Nothing” about PS3 games and countless “Fuck Sony” articles, day after day, in the news section.

I want to share with all of you who seem perplexed by the mere existence of Sony fanboys, the secret to PS3 appreciation :

Low Standards.

Think about it; the Sony fanboy has a glaring blindspot when it comes to valuing other consoles... the only real comparison he's able to make for the PS3 is with the PS2.
IcedEarth [mail] Jul 16 2007, 10:55 am EDT
I don't know about anywhere else, but here in Canada, Future Shop and Best Buy both cut $150 off the PS3 60GB model (I saw it in-store). I still didn't buy one though. That was just yesterday. Maybe they reacted too quickly to the news of the "price cut"? I don't know.

Sony is a bitch. PS3 is a whore. Over priced console. 4 - 5 games to look forward to only.

PS3 should die.
MrBored [mail] Jul 17 2007, 03:34 am EDT
After watching the G4 E3 footage, it really looks like the PS3 is going to have some seriously quality titles soon. I'm a huge Xbox360 fanboy, but if there are awesome games to be played on another system, I'll get one (if the price drop occurs). Its also really good at folding...
