Funcom Stocks Plummet After AoC Launch
Filed under: AGE OF CONAN, FUNCOM, MMORPG
Things aren't looking too good for Funcom, the developers of Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures. The company is currently dealing with a major financial problem. Following the release of AoC, their stock tumbled from $54 to $24 a share on the Oslo Stock Exchange, making for a loss of over 55% of the stock value (thanks Massively).

The status of AoC and Funcom is shaky at the moment, with ongoing speculation whether the game's launch is a success of failure. Post-launch bugs, reported accusations of forum censorship and numerous players leaving the game and other similar factors are likely contributing to the potential loss of the fan base.

Funcom stock has been fairly steady, approx. $25, for a few months before March '08. Once the game launched, a downturn ensued and has been going on since.

No wonder. The game is shit.

Sweet ! Funcom will now learn a valuable lesson about the consequences of being cocksuckers.

Really - the game's not bad, it's just that: a) it's got launch day bugs, and being an original devotee of WoW, I remember those well, and b) it didn't know whether it was trying to be too much like, or too much DISlike WoW, and as of right now it's uncomfortably straddling the fence and seems a little "vanilla" to me because of it's indecision.

But, having said that, the game DOES have heaps and heaps of potential, if the developers can get some game-tweaking patches/updates out the door soon enough, it will do very, very well, methinks.

Peace.

Funcom just needs to stop with the bullshit, get their fucking act together and may be, just may be AoC will do it.
psamathos [mail] Jul 28 2008, 10:24 am EDT
I guess their investors, after playing the game on release day, phoned up their brokers and said "SELL." I don't blame them.
Tyrael [mail] Jul 28 2008, 11:24 am EDT
before AoC release, there were many ppl saying it was going to overrun wow, and I always knew it was not lol, wow ftw and excited for Wrath of the Lich King!

My alt Shaman just dinged 20 and I hit 70 on my hunter today. Whait, what?
Ren3d [mail] Jul 28 2008, 02:03 am EDT
Whats this about forum censorship and ppl leaving the game??? I thought everyone was praising AoC and enjoying it. This is a surprise.
Blurg [mail] Jul 28 2008, 02:31 am EDT
Doesn't deter me, I'm still going to purchase and try it out.
Paul [mail] Jul 29 2008, 03:57 am EDT
I want them to be succesfull, I want them to make something as good as Longest Journey again :(.
Killer Klown [mail] Jul 29 2008, 07:16 am EDT
AOC is alot of fun; and really _does_ have a hell of alot of potential - but I and alot of people I know haven't even been able to log into it for weeks now - there's some problem with the update manager that Funcom refuses to acknowledge, and that prevents you from getting into the game. Even a clean removal and reinstallation doesn't fix the issue.
jojotheslug [mail] Jul 29 2008, 01:20 am EDT
I wanted AoC to do better, but FunCom still hasn't learned how to properly launch a title. That's really the only thing that's hurting Conan. Doesn't matter though, the only thing that's got me interested is if BioWare can actually create a compelling MMO that isn't just a leveling treadmill. If they can, they will own the MMO market.

Eh I bought it (that was a mistake) and played to about 40 then called it quits because it was boring as hell and the combos were a pain to pull off half of the time. I still have a few friends who stuck with it to 80, but even then there isn't much to do I guess. But what do I care, I'm going to go back to playing WOTLK beta.
skribb [mail] Jul 29 2008, 02:28 am EDT
Bah, just make Dreamfall Chapters already.
araczynski [mail] Jul 31 2008, 09:12 am EDT
the game is great, the mechanics are great, its just that content thins out after a while, which is more or less normal around launch time.

wow was a pile of shit when it was released too, if aoc makes it another year they could do a lot to improve it, i know i'd return in a heartbeat if they just had more content at the higher levels.

its still the most solo friendly game i've ever played.
slimey_smiley [mail] Aug 27 2008, 02:43 am EDT
A group of my friends are currently playing it and don't seem to dislike it.

I'm a player of Eve Online and it has its bugs and issues even today, while it's happily moving on since May 2003. Just depends what the game's "catch" is: in Eve, it's the player interaction and necessity for a common goal. Player-owned space spreads throughout constellations in the Outer Ring, while some alliances count several thousand members. You even have metagaming in the form of DoS attacks and TS hack attempts, as well as countermeasures and real-life information power struggle.

Compare that to mindless rat grinding with an axe, serving the purpose of getting enough XP to drive out the local bully.
