Sacred 2 Developer Closes
When Ascaron filed for bankruptcy protection it sold a majority of the company's franchises to Koch Media. On the other hand, they kept Sacred 2, because the add-on was nearing completion.

"Ascaron Studio 2 announced that it is shutting down, with only a handful people remaining who are finalizing various localizations," as reported by WP.

The news apparently came from a translation of a Sacred 2 forum thread.

There's a reason why I never reviewed Sacred 2 (PC). For one thing, I was terribly annoyed because of the game's technical problems, not to mention its boring gameplay, generic setting and uninspired storyline.

Fantastic news ! Just in time to balance out the This Is Vegas disappointment.

This is the third time I've installed it and I'm trying to play it. Absolutely nothing innovative for the Diablo-clone genre. In fact the game is just a big massive grind, that's all there is to it.

I had a similar experience. I couldn't find anything to make me care about what went on on the screen.

Sadly the original one had some good points to it - not good enough to make me want to _finish_ it, mind, though I did like the combo system and how they did some of the classes. The second one seemed to not only toss all of that out the window, but go _backwards_ in terms of playability and interest level.

I can't even return it to EB because I bought PC version...

Wasn't there a massive hype about this game way back? Cause if there was, I can at least blame my temporary insanity on them.
Cheddar [mail] Aug 04 2009, 08:11 am EDT
lol? I specifically remember predicting this would happen after seeing the first Sacred 2 gameplay video.

Serves them right for promoting that crappy Euro power-metal rock-opera band with their game.
InsanePotato [mail] Aug 04 2009, 12:37 pm EDT
Lets face it the reason Diablo and Diablo 2 were so good so long was because they polished it for so long. They didn't just make a huge world, they made a well thought out world with well linked campaigns. Ascaron never got that.

Say what you want.
For me, it’s sad news.
I enjoyed Sacred 2.
Perhaps it was the super grind (liked it), or may be it was the ‘Euro power-metal rock-opera band with their game’ (also liked it).

What can I say? Bad things happen to all.
At least they did not jump on the DLC bandwagon – making free content add-ons (such as the Christmas Island) – like so many others today.

So maybe the other way of making games is right after all.
Treat gamers like children, charge for countless DLCs you make, and keep on releasing never-ending sequels of the same titles.

Sacred 2 might not have been your game. That’s just preference.
But not appreciating an ‘old school’ company is not befitting of a true gamer.

Who is going to be next? Piranha Bytes? CD Project, 2K Czech?
If that happens, we’ll be left with just a few shark-like, greedy corporations, which names I will not mention.
Cheddar [mail] Aug 04 2009, 07:18 am EDT
You don't usually see studios fold after putting out a game that actually delivers what it advertises and is more or less well received.

So CD Projekt is doin' dandy right now, due to how successful Witcher has been for them. 2K Czech will also be fine as long as Mafia 2 lives up to its hype (but if it doesn't they'll probably be in trouble, because they haven't put out much other than that in awhile).
Jedrus [mail] Aug 04 2009, 10:33 am EDT
That’s kinda funny.
Just checked some forums about Ascaron going down, and noticed many folks saying they would buy a copy of Sacred 2, in attempt to ‘help’ their situation.

I know this is probably a childish gesture – but what the hell – I like that kind of spirit.
As my last tribute to Ascaron, tomorrow I am going to buy an Xbox 360 copy of Sacred 2 (already have the PC version).

After that, it’s just a matter of keeping my fingers crossed :)
Zoe [mail] Aug 04 2009, 11:02 am EDT
That’s sweet idea Jedrus.
I just ordered Sacred 2 on Xbox 360 from Amazon.
Save Ascaron!!!

Who knows, it may become a collector’s item.
Hmm … valuable.
