Velvet Assassin Developer Shuts Down

Replay Studios recently released a mutliplatform sneaker called Velvet Assassin, which didn't do too well. The studio is now filing for bankruptcy. 4players.de reports that the info was confirmed by a former employee. There's also a blog post at usf3.de that makes it clear the studio is indeed in hot water.

Yeah, well, if Velvet Assassin is anything to go by, then this wasn't such a bad decision. Shame. The whole idea behind Velvet Assassin had some potential. Although I feel sorry for the people who will be out of work, it was pretty much an expected occurrence.

Replay Studios won't be at the Cologne Gamescom later this month, despite their recent announcement that the company will be present at the show.

Source.

It's a new trend: make a shity game, promote it as "revolutionary", take the money and close the studio ...
Vader [STAFF] [mail] Aug 05 2009, 10:19 am EDT
And name it after something popular:

The Assassin's World of Dutycraft: Star Halo Trek Creed Wars

Back story/settings only complements a game, it's not the core.

Look at mario, the story on paper is "FAT and short plumber in red with mustache collecting mushrooms, flowers and floating coins; trying to save princess kidnapped by turtles and other reptiles"

Mario's "idea" sounds silly but we all know it worked because the gameplay was great, you take any setting and story and paste it into mario's gameplay and it'll still be great.

My point is: a great game is great even when it's in wire frame mode and without a story. Therefore we should not place too much importance to a game's story when it succeed or failed.

I was actually hoping for an improved sequel.
im_stardust [mail] Aug 05 2009, 12:25 pm EDT
Good. Developers who come up with games like Velvet Assassin or Sacred 2 should not exist on the market. And there are still a lot of them out there that need to shut down.
Zoe [mail] Aug 05 2009, 01:21 am EDT
Stardust, you need to shut down.
Stop hating everything!
Show some support for your fellow geeky/gamer/devs.

The world according to Stardust:

Part I
“I hate you, mehmehmehmehmmmeeehhh.”
The End

Killer Klown [mail] Aug 05 2009, 02:16 am EDT
Enh, under most circumstances I'd agree with you, Zoe - if you don't have a solution, then you shouldn't complain about the problem. However, in this case, Stardust has a point. Putting out a broken/crappy/unplayable game is _failure_, and we should not, as a society or subculture, support failure. If a company puts out something that's incomplete or just downright stupid, it deserves to be dropped off the map. This isn't malice, it isn't hatred, it's simple logic. If you have a game company that continues to exist and thrive despite being utterly talentless hacks, you'll have a community made up of nothing but EA games - bland, derivative, poorly coded and rushed pieces of crap that have no business being on the market. I've said it before, but the gaming industry is one of those few things that you can actually point back and say that it _was_ better in the good old days; gaming companies generally hung by a thread, and their livelyhood was based on keeping a good reputation amongst the gamers - sometime within the last twenty years, however, games became less about entertainment quality and more about marketing. The games themselves became secondary to the media blitz that surrounded them.

This kind of good stuff needs to happen to a lot more developers who release shitty games. Burn, mothufuckas, buuuuurrrrrrrrrnnnnnn! HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Should you rejoice when a gaming studio shuts down?

Only if you don’t care about gaming;
Or you have no clue about negative repercussions the whole deal induces.
You should be very concerned, even if you don’t like the particular titles made by the affected studios.

You may say their games were “shitty” and they deserved their fate.
But, eliminating game makers can only lead to making even shittier games.
Less gaming developers means less competition, which in turn leads to more substandard releases.

It also means higher prices and more overpriced DLCs.
Basically, it introduces a free reign for mega-producers who decide – in chasing profit frenzy – what types of games will see the daylight.

In addition, the trend causes a stressful working environment for the ‘surviving’ companies, worrying about whether they going to be axed next if they don’t ‘perform’ financially.

Remember, best selling – or most popular – game is not necessarily the one who deserves your love. Otherwise, The Sims, or Guitar Hero would clearly be the best there is on the market.
Games made to please the shareholders will unlikely please those who game for that sheer inner satisfaction.

It is unreasonable to expect that a company will produce one blockbuster after another. Most of them go through ups and downs in a process that involves lots of learning and improving before they come up with that unique and amazing hit.
And even then, no studio is guaranteed that each following title, or sequel, will measure up to the predecessor.
Add to this recipe the unappreciative and ungrateful consumers, and you are really walking a minefield.

So, you can either rejoice that the branch you’re sitting on is being slowly sawed off, or be more supportive of the industry that you refer to as your hobby.

The choice is yours, or the choice will be made for you.

It's all fun and games until EA buys everything that hasn't already shut down.
Terminator [mail] Aug 05 2009, 09:44 am EDT
I will be the first to jump ship when EA controls everything.
