25,000 Brits in Trouble Over Illegal Downloads
Filed under: PIRACY, UK
In the United Kingdom, several video game companies are cooking up a major assault against illegal downloads, demanding payment from thousands of families who obtained the latest releases via the Web without paying.

Word has it that top developers "will serve notice on 25,000 people across the UK, requiring each one to pay £300 immediately to settle out of court. Those who refuse risk being taken to court. The companies will target their initial legal actions on 500 people who ignore the letters."

The companies in question are Atari, Topware Interactive, Reality Pump, Techland and Codemasters. Further details on this are available at TimesOnline.co.uk.

Also, just so you get a clearer picture on the UK gaming scene, game sales are predicted to reach £2 billion this year, while consoles such as the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii are expected to hit 9.1 million.

So... Atari will make you pay for the piece of shit Alone in The Shit.
Topware Interactive will make you pay for Two Piece Of Shit Worlds.
Reality Pump will also make you pay for Two Piece Of Shit Worlds.
Techland will... waaait a minute, what the fuck have Techland done these past couple of years ? NOTHING ! Now get the fuck out !
And Codemasters are brits so they just HAD to have a piece of the pie.

This just makes these gaming companies look like money grubbing bullys. I reckon 5% of the 25 k would have actually bought the game! This is a very dark day for the gaming industry as people are always going to side with the "unemployed mother of two" !

Is it really worth it? 25 000 people that will never purchase another game from these companies, and like the napsta issue people will just find another way to get these games without being tracked!
kriso [mail] Aug 20 2008, 11:59 am EDT
They are even accusing people who havn't had anything to do with it (me for example).

I recieved one of these letters 2 week ago and freaked out!

i would also like to add. One of these cases went to court and woman had to pay £16,000!

It's started-- piracy is now actually being fought. It's time to decide: do we fight back, or do we let them steamroll us, like we were back in the Napster age?

Take a look at any games site, or walk through your local games store, and then tell me that even PC gaming development is in hard times - there are more games and games development studios than ever!

Then consider this - games have wildly different budgets, yet almost all end up being sold at a premium $90 Au in Australia (when the same games are much cheaper in the US) by monopolized brick and mortar shops.

So what your telling me is that in an industry hitting higher profits than ever, with ever increasing competition of development studios, you somehow have monopolized pricing? Shouldnt competition be bringing prices DOWN, not UP?

Answer is simple - publishers are FUCKWITS who collaborate with FUCKWIT brick and mortar stores like EB Games to completely rort the end purchaser and the development studio - while at the same time complaining that their monopolized profits would be EVEN BIGGER if the end user were not able to SCREW THEM over.

Why the hell should we take this? Do everyone a favour, visit EB Games one day, take the three most expensive games off their shelves, walk up to the counter and tell them you want $20 AU off each or your walking out empty handed. When they inevitably tell you no, do just that. If enough people do this often enough, maybe their fuckwit marketers will realise the market will NOT bear the higher price - and thats why theres piracy in the first place.

this means WAR!!
we shal battle them in court like at the end of mortal combat!
or as if they where trying to (dare i say it) BAN GTA 4!!
one way or another u cant beat piracy till they ban the internet witch WILL NEVER HAPPEN
Blurg [mail] Aug 21 2008, 05:36 am EDT
Atari, Topware Interactive, Reality Pump, Techland and Codemasters

Never buying anything of your shit again.
Littlebastard [mail] Aug 21 2008, 08:13 am EDT
I'm not going to steal a game just because I don't like the pricing, that's why i check reviews and base it on total score. Do I agree with the pricing, hell no, It's gouging. If you want to make yourself heard then do it the right way, go outside grab every outraged gamer you can find, tell them not to purchase another game until they drop the price. Eventually they will see their profits going down, and thats how you get them to notice you, stealing games will NOT fix the problem. Fight it, until they do it.
