Do my eyes deceive me?

The king of MMO's and in fact, king of all games, taken down (temporarily?) by Aion?

I'm so proud!

Holy cow. So, that leaves me with this question. Is Aion then actually any good? I would love to play a different MMO then WoW, trouble is...they all just suck.

un om bun: They say Aion is just another retarded grindfest.
Copperr: Don't listen to the crowd they say jump.

Aion looked too familiar for me to buy in but you know me and my mates have just got into Age of Conan after spotting it on Amazon for £3 and a year in its actually really good fun the combat feels so much better than other MMO's i've played and it looks sublime. :) (there is a 7 day trial up at the moment if you fancy a crack)

Well, I have been playing Aion for a while myself - it's got is good and bad points.
First, like most other Korean MMOs, the game looks very pretty - in fact, it runs on the Crysis engine: so if that game made your PC cry, this one would too. Gameplay for the first ten or fifteen levels or so is alot of fun - it's very story centric as opposed to being the smattering of random, repeat ad nauseum quests that you usually see in MMOs (One of the quests involves stealing a nymphs clothes while she's bathing, for example) Character customization is very good - as in, City of Heroes very good. However, it doesn't really provide you with an appropriate scale of what's 'average' for a character - if you mess around too much with the body proportions, you could end up with this thing that stands about nine feet tall when all you were going for was slightly above average. As each character moves at the same overall speed no matter what the size, this means that the running animation for a thing that big tends to look... well, _dorky_, to say the least.

As far as it being a grindfest, I've not noticed anything above and beyond the average MMO - it certainly isn't as bad as WOW in that respect. It is, however, a Korean RPG and as such is rather linear in presentation. That, and the fact that it's NCSoft, is where it starts to fail - NC is famous for presenting games that are really good at the outset, but tarnish after about a month and utterly fall flat within 3. Aion is starting to shape up to be something just like this. There's a very limited selection of equipment as you go through, my understanding is that the classes are not at all balanced (which may or may not be fixed in patches) and, most daminingly, it seems that the only reason to get to level 50 (The current level cap) is to PVP - and that's not an exaggeration, they pretty much have said so in the company line. You get up to 50, then the only thing you can do is hop into the contested zone and start beating up on the opposing faction players. No high level dungeons or raids or whatnot - just that. Not exactly very inspiring.

wait some month and aion will fall down cause of uber raid content to farm new epics to get new epics
Corpse Grinder [mail] Oct 21 2009, 06:24 am EDT
Well i am currently trying to enjoy the journey and not race to level 50 but I also dont think there is going to be enough content to keep people happy, also dont like the level caps on instances.
SGMRock [mail] Oct 21 2009, 07:30 am EDT
If the game is anything like Lineage 2 you will never reach level cap without botting or playing your life away. I heard the game is already overrun with bots just like Lineage 2 was and still is now.

They normally let you level along pretty good to a certain point then the xp curve goes way up. Like around 45 or 46 probably the xp curve will be to the point you may have to get as much xp as it took you to go from 20-45 to get from 45 to 47 and so on.

Also in L2 there was never the amount of raiding there is in a game like WOW. There were raid bosses that would drop normal gear and a few Epic bosses that were very hard to do without a good clan that would drop the same epic most everytime or everytime depending on the boss. Those were not put into the game until the first major update and then only 1 at a time per major update just about. Basically the game was about seiging and PVP period. And griding out stuff for hours to get item drops to craft better gear.

Not sure how much of that has changed in Aion as far as game play, but I know that the botting is still going on hardcore.

Nancy Drew is back, yay!

Corpse Grinder [mail] Oct 21 2009, 08:55 am EDT
The Aion sales clearly show how bored ppl are with WOW.
Kurio [mail] Oct 21 2009, 09:03 am EDT
Aion isnt bad per se but it does lack content.
But then again people are spoiled, i remember when wow's content resumed to black rock depths, later being introduced stuff as spire and scholo and dire maul.
same with raiding dungeons, there wasn't any choice for a good while (molten core yay) and it took horrendous amounts of runs to get enough rep for the water on molten core to even be able to fight the last guy, and for ages he was impossible to.
Oh and pvp resumed to tarren mill and stv ganking.

Where does Risen and Machinarium number?

Edit- oh, September sales. Silly me, never mind :)
