C&C4 Devs Getting the Boot?

That gorgeous, heartwarming smile says it all I think. Yesterday, EA revealed its plans to "narrow its product portfolio to provide greater focus on titles with higher margin opportunities." They also said that the action will result in the "closure of several facilities and a headcount reduction of approximately 1,500 positions, of which 1,300 are included in a restructuring plan."

Kotaku has a follow-up on that story. Apparently, "sources" claim the development team working on Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight received a warning that they will be laid off when the game ships next year.

Word has it that other teams are in danger of losing their jobs as well, including the Spore team and Pandemic Studios LA (Mercenaries and The Saboteur).

Maybe omlettes are burning again?

not that im an insensitive bastard......um, actually i am but that's beside the point.

this is very funny and it shows just how 'great' life is, a real sunshine isn't it ?
try telling those 1200 families about god closing doors and opening windows, fairy tales about silver linings.

I hate those cocaine faced bitches.
Telling that they will be fired once they finish the job? Come on!!! What kind of encouragement is that?

I would like to see the CnC devs going balistic on those execs. Not that I care about CnC but this kind of treatment is absurd and is probably against the law... somewhere... probably Sweden.
Roland19 [mail] Nov 11 2009, 09:09 am EST
What a boneheaded move this is.

I won't pretend to understand the complexities of running a large business, but telling someone they'll be laid off as soon as they finish a project doesn't seem like the best incentive for promoting hard work.
Sword Fight: Aye. I know it's somewhat common to lay off developers after...

It's not very heartening to hear a game's dev team is being fired after they're done making the game. It's only logical to presume that they're not working well enough to be kept, so this kinda works as counter-marketing.
And damn it but I want C&C4 to play good.
Stick! [mail] Nov 11 2009, 07:53 pm EST
Yeah, I would definitely do my darnedest to slack off at work. Why bother working hard when the carrot at the end of the stick is a kick in the ass?
rapideyemovement [mail] Nov 11 2009, 10:20 pm EST
I don't like that face
barasawa [mail] Nov 12 2009, 01:23 am EST
I've been steadily losing faith in that franchise since they eviscerated Westwood.
ivan5815 [mail] Nov 12 2009, 03:50 am EST
the main problem with EA is, they milked it dry and then 'fire' the cows
skribb [mail] Nov 12 2009, 03:58 am EST
What a lovely shit-eating grin.
Terminator [mail] Nov 12 2009, 04:57 am EST
My heart goes out to those guys/girls, companies are laying off left and right. C&C 4 might go down as the worst RTS in history. EA had the nerve to tell them that they are canned when the game is done? If I was on that team, I would screw C&C 4 up as much as I could.

As for EA's plan to "narrow its product portfolio to provide greater focus on titles with higher margin opportunities", you can bet that EA will focus entirely on console games. PC games aren't worth making anymore, with million of people pirating the games.
