2012 - Roland Emmerich's latest end-of-the-world bonanza. Watched the damn thing a few days ago. Bloody hell, what possessed me to do that? Well, just let me recap for a sec. I did enjoy The Day After Tomorrow and most of Emmerich's mindless blockbuster movies (always remember to leave the brain out the door for those), but this is a bit different. The plot is almost sub-mental and really not worth even the slightest bit of anyone's attention. You know, it's a classic big-budget crapfest, fresh from the Hollywood machinery of retardness. Okay, maybe I'm being a bit harsh here. I did actually like some aspects of the movie. The humor (although pretty basic) works in nearly every scene it was used in and I like the cast - particularly the lead, played by J. Cusack, and the cynical politically cold Chief of Staff (Oliver Platt). The special effects are what makes this movie stand out. They are nothing short of spectacular. Seriously guys, the scenes of massive destruction are worth checking out on the big screen. Beyond that, there's not a lot to see. But then, what would you expect of Emmerich and a predictably superficial disaster movie.

Morning. I enjoyed 2012, even if no one else did. Emmerich shows the worst-case scenario for 2012, and he pulls no punches.

The most terrifying part for me was Yellowstone's eruption. You can call everything else bullshit, but Yellowstone is very real. The fact is we are over-due for an eruption from that Super Volcano, and when it goes, the Central US will be destroyed. I'm about 1,000 miles away from Yellowstone, but the Ash Cloud would still reach me in hours. I'm not saying it will go in 2012, but it will go sometime.

I agree. What a messy and soulless movie. I kept wishing for everyone to die, except maybe Platt's, Cusack's and Harrelson's characters. The effects looked great but they didn't have an impact because everything else was a joke.
With all it's CGI goodness, 2012 wasn't half as intense as one minute of Pandorum. A movie that cost 10 times less and of course, flopped. So, fuck you Roland and co ! I can't wait for Independence Day 2.

man, what is he if not but a shadow over the earth and a minute's dream into the future ?
how the indigo shroud of life unfolds into colours when a painter sees us and closes his eyes.

right....disaster movies...umm....they're cool. i love watching shit explode and people die by the masses. (much better than slasher movies)
loved Independence Day for that reason.....and Mars Attacks.

death is always fun when it happens to others, that's pretty much unanimously agreed.

Special effects - the sole reason to watch the movie. I haven't yet but i have planned it for coming Tuesday and i cannot wait. I am sucker for special effects. Give me moar!!!
Nameinuse [mail] Nov 14 2009, 11:45 am EST
I watched it today, and I liked it. The special effects make the walls of reality melt. But in a good way. I do wish the creaters would have watched the movie, and then made some of the cliches with characters the opposite of what they were.

I cannot believe this! AC2 froze on me! and it's a console game so they can't blame my system.

Afraid it maybe IS my console going pre-rrod I restart the game from the beginning and it works.......I pop in other games including GTA4 that made my previous 360 rrod and it works.........

These developers, the game was perfect but why couldn't they iron out the bugs and make it not freeze?????? I was willing to put up with minor glitches but one where it literally stop you from playing?

Ah fuck! I'm going on to see 2012 with my date and hope I can forget about this.
Fatty: don't pirate the game and then you won't have that problem.
SpaceMonkey: Your accusation is unfounded.

just watched 2012, yes it's not as philosophical as the matrix or gattaca. But I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I felt I've gotten what I paid for and that's entertainment. Maybe it's because I didn't expect it to change my life or enlighten me to perceive life from a different angle. It was a roller coaster ride and it was well worth it.

All you nay sayers should embrace american immaturity and enjoy the idiocracy.

Well, it seems NASA has had enough of the 2012 scare. They now have an FAQ about 2012 on their website. They sure don't seem to be panicking about it. Then again, they probably wouldn't tell us if they were panicking.

KeepSmilin [mail] Nov 15 2009, 09:30 pm EST
So how many people here know 2013 (later revised to 2012) doomsday was coined by some random mayan historian with next to no hard evidence back in 1960s?
benihana [mail] Nov 16 2009, 09:10 am EST
*raises hand...

It's actually somewhat accurate. The date, anyway. The result, however, is what is subject to wider speculation.

Isn't it a "cycle" form the calendar? Something like every 5000 years, the calendar resets. The problem is stupid people who assume that "reset" means "the world ends, ahhhhhhhhhhhh, weeeeeee!" No one, neither modern Mayans nor Ancient Mayan scholars, have any idea what the end of the calendar means. It could be that they simply didn't lay it out that far. It's also thought that the end of the calendar would simply be cause for celebration, but that the calendar (and our existence) would still continue after that.

Modern day Mayans who are culturally 100% Mayan attach almost no significance to the date, so it's not important enough that it was carried down orally or scripturally to these people. All other aspects of their heritage have been carried down to them, but 2012 has not. So that's saying a lot right there.

The date also varies (like KeepSmilin pointed out) because the Mayans had multiple calendar with different cycles and time-period factored in. They were a pretty smart culture.

In the end, though, it's all hogwash and speculation, nothing more. Also, keep in mind that the "Apocalypse," specifically, the end of all existence, is a very dramatized, hollywoodized, Western belief (most religions that have some kind of "cycle" don't believe existence ends, but that things simply refresh).
