Ubisoft at War With SA.com Over Jade Raymond
French publisher Ubisoft has issued a Cease & Desist letter to popular Internet shock/humor site, Somethingawful.com, as a response to an offensive comic posted to the site's forums. The target of this offensive comic is non other than Jade Raymond, the producer of the recently released sandbox sneaker game, Assassin's Creed.

Ubisoft is outraged at the usage of Jade's likeness in the comic and is claiming it has "caused immeasurable harm to Ms. Raymond's reputation and career, and constitute an egregious infringement of Ms. Raymond's personal rights and privacy rights..."

Now I don't certainly dispute that showing any actual person's face on Somethingawful.com is the closest thing to a digital gang rape anyone could get, but we simply have to look at this from another angle.

Ubisoft are the ones who blatantly exploited Jade Raymond's good looks and sexuality; every single interview on AC I've seen building up to the game's release, every single presentation was carried out by Ms. Raymond.

And now, what do you know?! When you play with fire, when you tease desperate geeks with lots of free time on their hands, you get burned.

While Jade's hotness was working to their advantage in promoting the game, then all was all right, but now that they see the other side of that coin, they are crying privacy rights.

Douches. Hey, I know, they should have Penny Soft sic their army of followers on the hordes of crazies at Somethingawful.com. Geek Wars!

Oh noes !
The poor little princes has gotten her first ever taste of trouble. It's not fair ! Oh, I do hope she doesn't succumb to drugs and alcohol.
The innocent thing is now at the mercy of big bad wolves and WE have to do something about it ! Write protest letters to everyone who dislikes the game. Make a petition asking Ubisoft to give her a raise. Send her our prayers.

Oh, man I'm glad it came to this. The little devil inside me is happy and asking for more. It was about time this bullshit superstar behaviour bit her on the ass. Please someone show me the path to the infamous comic, I swear I'll enjoy it to the fullest.

"Ubisoft is outraged..." What about Jade?

P.S. Assassin's Creed!
lothodon [mail] Nov 17 2007, 06:14 am EST
perhaps jade needs to file suit against ubi for using her to sell a game. not her brain either.

The funny thing is the guy that made the comic isn't even registered at SomethingAwful.
skribb [mail] Nov 17 2007, 07:11 am EST
If I was famous, I'd fucking love it if people made fun of me. It's cool, it's fun. Fuck Ubisoft.
skribb [mail] Nov 17 2007, 07:13 am EST
Also Jade doesn't even know she's been used by Ubi. I read that in a Swedish interview that was carried out when she visited Denmark. I'll translate what she said:

"To me, it feels weird getting all this attention just because I am a girl. I wish it wouldn't be so shallow, I wish people would go "Wow, what a cool game", instead of talking about the producer. Having a girl as a producer shouldn't be weird and unusual, just like having a Canadian producer shouldn't be weird."

Yep, she has no idea.
un om bun [mail] Nov 17 2007, 07:22 am EST
Yeah, she said:
"It's like, I do not know that my body is being used by Ubi. And I also have no idea of whether I'm like, sexy or not. You know ? I'm just your average hard working gal, like... struggling to make end's meet. Like yeah... you know ?"
burnart [mail] Nov 17 2007, 07:55 am EST
this would have passed without notice if not ubi had made a big deal out of it...hehe

now Im gonna find that comic
greenberet [mail] Nov 17 2007, 08:10 am EST
Can someone please post the comic? :)
Thanks!

The story is a link to the original SA thread which includes the SA response.

I'm certain you'll find any other related things in the comments. ;)

I think that comic derides Ubisoft more than Jade. 2lions is right - they *did* use her to sell a game and they should have expected this kind of thing. She should sue Ubisoft! But then, who would employ her?
un om bun [mail] Nov 17 2007, 09:34 am EST
Ok, I found the comic and I think it's quite tame. Real funny but nothing to sue over. She's merely shown doing her job and she even has more clothes on than usual.
Just follow Rafal's link and check the comments. You'll see that the image is nothing but a compliment to Jade's talent and determination.

As others have said, Ubisoft brought this on themselves by using Jade to sell a game. On the other hand, SA.com just became one of my favorite websites. I love that comic!
greenberet [mail] Nov 17 2007, 05:25 am EST
I put it on ImageShack

I must say that comic is very unfair and tasteless... BUT... this is teh intarwebs.
Hurion [mail] Nov 18 2007, 04:48 am EST
SA has nothing to do with it. It was just posted on the forums by some guy. It's like Ubi suing AT because we posted it here. It's complete bullshit, and it's going to be thrown out.
Corpse Grinder [mail] Nov 18 2007, 05:12 am EST
And now because they have made such a big deal about it EVERYONE is going to see it
doomsday [mail] Nov 18 2007, 12:30 pm EST
AAAAAAAAAAAGGGHH HAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!

THAT Was Naice!! I'LL buy ur game too JADE!! LOL!!
run_like_snot [mail] Nov 18 2007, 04:42 am EST
bah I agree that its best to ignore such crap but at the same time there's no need to focus on people behind games beyond their involvement in it. But I'm one of those people who think that women's magazines should be banned and people's privacy and dignity respected even if they are public figures. I reckon that even an actor/singer should have their privacy maintained, no need to come up with false stories about them or publish unauthorised photos. Exception is politicians but only if what they do in their private life could have impact on official duties.
And even if "Ubisoft brought this on themselves by using Jade to sell a game" there's no need to stoop that low so to speak. I mean just because Ubisoft is seen to be "wrong", doesn't mean someone else should be "wrong" back.
And FWIW I don't think the comic is tame by most standards, frankly it's only tame by the standards of those who are used to pornography. That would be most of us. And I'm sure most readers here wouldn't want to see someone they knew in a comic like that.
Any case I don't think Jade or Ubisoft's reputation is being harmed as most sensible people will see the comic for what it is, a comic.
Just my 2c.
Satanicat [mail] Nov 18 2007, 07:09 am EST
Funny comic. Silly Ubi.. now everyone is gonna see it, not just the SA Goons.
coldhearts [mail] Nov 18 2007, 10:11 am EST
