Top 10 Pirated PC Games of 2008
Guess what, Spore was the most pirated PC game this year. According to a list compiled by Torrent-tracking blog TorrentFreak, EA's Spore was illegally downloaded over 1.7 million times. Other releases were tracked. Check it out:

1. Spore / 1,700,000 / Sept. 2008
2. The Sims 2 / 1,150,000 / Sept. 2004
3. Assassins Creed / 1,070,000 / Nov. 2007
4. Crysis / 940,000 / Nov. 2007
5. Command & Conquer 3 / 860,000 / Mar. 2007
6. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare / 830,000 / Nov. 2007
7. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas / 740,000 / Jun. 2005
8. Fallout 3 / 645,000 / Oct. 2008
9. Far Cry 2 / 585,000 / Oct. 2008
10. Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 / 470,000 / Oct. 2008

Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed is among the top pirated games, as you can see, with more than 1 million downloads. If you can recall, Ubisoft experienced problems with piracy over the PC version of Assassin's Creed very early on. They said the leaked version was downloaded over 700,000 times, which cost the company millions of dollars. The publisher filed a lawsuit against Charlotte, North Carolina-based Optical Experts Manufacturing, which had been contracted to reproduce copies of the game. They traced the pirated versions to the residence of an OEM employee. Later, they asked for damages and legal in the amount of $10 million.

The Sims 2 in second place of a piracy chart? Hasn't the Sims 2 been in the top sales charts for the whole year? Just how many people play the Sims 2???

here's a good question, if a game is downloaded 1 million times and after each download it is deleted, does it still count as theft ?

no product, no crime.

Question - how do they get these numbers and claim any true accuracy? Answer. Someone pulled it out of their ass. You can bet the numbers are far different.

I guess its fairly easy to monitor torrent traffic based on the way the 'servers' work and this doesn't even account for pirated DVD sales (in places like Pakistan and China) and Usenet.

Up yours, EA!

If they cut all PC game prices to $24.95 piracy would cease to be a concern. Consoles will continue to get gaped for $59.99 full price new releases, of course.

What slays me is I see every 360 game in the world float by on the internet tubes as well, but I don't care to void my warranty just yet.

I think if I dont get a reasonable amount of entertainment from a game, I shouldnt be obligated to pay for it. Thats why the majority of games Ill actually pay for are those that promise a high degree of replayability, which is something that can be most often found in online games -not incidentally because online cdkey authentication is also the best way to prevent piracy, and also why I cant ever risk pirating a steam game... if I had a working crack that ever got detected, I would lose all the games on my account I HAD paid for.

No one is forcing you to have games, can't afford or don't like , don't steal.

Theft is theft, regardless of the excuses some have to steal other people's work.

EA bashing is getting so old , almost like "M$" bashing.Yawn.

... Wow, I haven't pirated a single one of those games! :D
Killer Klown [mail] Dec 11 2008, 11:59 am EST
Heh. Here's a thought - institute a 48 hour return policy on games. Right now, Games are about the only thing you can't return for at least something approaching full value; the logic here is that one of two things will happen A> Within 48 hours you should know if you like the game enough to keep it and B> any game you can beat within 48 hours of a normal person's life - IE, not the WOW whackos that got to level 80 the same day WotLK came out - isn't worth paying for anyway.

From that list I have pirated Crysis then bought it, I also pirated COD4 then also bought that game, I have no problem with pirating shit at all, after all I'm not going to be spending my money on bullshit so try before you buy people.

I have pirated GTA:SA also and then bought it but after getting halfway through the game I had regrets about that decision and uninstalled it.. besides that CnC:RA3 is shit, Farcry2 is shit, and lastly Ass Creed is shit.. I have Fallout 3 but I have yet to try it, I will when I get some time but I'll most likely be buying that one also.
