I have been absorbed by XCOM for the last 2 weeks. It's very broken, but so addicting.
I started Far Cry 3 recently, and it feels exactly the same as Far Cry 2, but more streamlined, and I anticipate it being more enjoyable/

The only thing I object to in FC3 is Ubisoft choosing the same bloody setting as nearly ever Far Cry or Crysis game. Why does it have to be another bloody tropical island?
It also allows drastic variation on terrain, from water to hills to winding roads. It provides a designated play area that feels natural since the boundaries are natural boundaries, without restricting freedom of movement to implement them.
Islands are a pretty easy way of creating a game world of arbitrary but purposeful size, and they carry an aesthetic that makes them particularly suited for sandbox style gameplay.
Why tropical, and not a heath covered tundra with cold winds scouring it? Tropical allows for the variety of fauna and flora....
Really my main issue with Far Cry 3 is the fact that my graphics card is old tech that's forced to run DX9 mode, and my monitor is a little too small for the experience to be properly enjoyable.
Apart from that, it's ok. I wouldn't say I'm thrilled to be playing yet *another* shooter, since I've grown tired of the genre... But it works and it holds my attention.
But FC3? I like it.
I don't know about it being GotY, but it's certainly a drastic improvement on FC2, in my mind.
