One difference between Deus Ex and Deus Ex : HR was that in Deus Ex taking a side route or finding some hidden shit under the stairwell actually meant something. In the the first Deus Ex Gathering multitools and lockpicks was actually handy and also spending your points accordingly was also useful.
Another one was that Deus Ex had that cyberpunk/apocalyptic feeling while Human Revolution was an orange glowing pile of futuristic shit.
Too many stuff is redundant in Human Revolution. Not even by far as well crafted as the first.

Spending your points early on was pretty useful. I always focused on stealth/hacking which made things so much easier to get around. I always hated the multi-tool/lockpick stuff because there was never enough of it and so many things to get.
After playing a few times through HR, I tend to find multiple routes that do not involve playing Rambo. Exploration was always key in the previous games and this one actually promotes it better by giving the players EXP. Side routes existed and there was plenty of loot to be found in some of them, just no multitools and lockpicks.
