Was the indoctrination theory ever explained or acknowledged by BioWare though? Don't think so.

If they did, then ARG would fail.
Bioware cannot say, that they made it, because it would just end it.

One of main characteristics of Alternate Reality Game is that it is never acknowledged by the creators, that it exists, which adds that extra spice to it. You can see the evidence, but 'the man' denies their existence, so it has that 'The Matrix' vibe, which is really enthralling.

There's an Extra Credits episode that goes into more detail about ARG.

Indoctrination Theory isn't the most typical ARG, because there aren't any puzzles to solve, except for explaining the nonsensical endings and weird things that happen in ME3.

But I think it can be classified as an ARG.
