» All About Alan Wake on ActionTrip

While we're on the subject, Alan Wake isn't an embarrassingly short game, but it's not a lengthy game either. There's no doubt a majority of gamers will finish it in about 9-10 hours while playing on 'normal' difficulty (maybe even less than that, if they don't deviate from the main path to search for hidden manuscripts and coffee thermoses).

There are many things I expected of this game and I'm sure a lot of people will feel that way before trying it out. Once you get into the first scenes of Alan Wake, there's a good chance you'll play all the way to the last episode. The story isn't brilliant, but it gives players what they need to keep moving forward. What really kept me playing was the actual combat and fighting off enemies with a neat combination of light and firearms. When it comes down to it, I guess having solid gameplay mechanics is the most important thing for any game. In that sense, Alan Wake did not disappoint. Also, the voice acting is very good and the music suits the atmosphere perfectly.

In this day and age, it doesn't set new boundaries in the world of modern-day gaming, which, of course is a shame, seeing as it was once one of the most anticipated titles in recent history. It's painfully obvious this game needed to be released earlier. As far as the visuals, go, Alan Wake looks okay, as long as we're talking about the dark segments. During daytime sections it's easy to notice how outdated everything looks. Still, this didn't bother me much, because I really enjoyed the moody ambiance, in addition to the addictive gameplay mechanics, which, you'll have to admit is more important than pompous, fancy graphics.

My biggest regret is that this didn't turn out to be a longer game, with more characters and a more intricate plot.

HIGHS
Alan Wake succeeds in luring you into a dark, immersive and incredibly gripping setting, one that was clearly created with admirable attention to detail, the gameplay is great and quite enjoyable, accompanied by good voice acting and a pleasing soundtrack.

LOWS
It's easy at times, story isn't as interesting as we'd hoped, graphics look a bit outdated (mostly during the game's daytime sections), and... it took them 5 years to make only six Episodes?

Well the thing is you see. I've finished it. And I want to play some more. But I can't because there isn't any more. Maybe I should blame everything on DLCs...

So my guess is that this game was not worth the 5 year wait. I'm 110% sure, that Microass, scraped atleast 4-5 hours of the original gameplay out, for the DLC!

It looks like it. That would be my guess. They figure, it's still going to bring them some extra money, so fuck it, why the hell not.

just wait 12 months and get the complete pack for $29..
what a surprise! it's Microsoft.

It probably will, since most gamers have a tendency to play through the whole story and if it means DLC and selling theur sole to devil, so be it.
I on the other hand I am proud to say that I haven't bought a single DLC since the faggot-ass unholy son of the satan was born!

no dlc here either, as it's never worth getting.
i like my discs which i can lend out and borrow, dlc is just for crack heads.

You all shouldn't just assume Remedy had no say in the DLC decision -- they are a studio strapped for cash now, with everything riding on Alan Wake. It's been a looong time since their last game, they've spent a lot of money developing Wake, and they were never sitting on a massive nest-egg to begin with. If they don't pull in a lot of profit from Wake, it's not implausible to think that Remedy could fold a year from now.

Anyway, I haven't had a chance to rent Alan Wake yet, and unfortunately it's gonna be a while longer. Vader's review seems to be objectively written, though.

Looking forward to what Yahtzee's Zero Punctuation show is gonna say about his boss's (The Escapist) perfect score for Alan Wake.

They probably will make a lot of money since the positive points and feedback waights over the negative ones. Non of the negative ones are game experience changeing!

You don't know about ZP? Oh man.

Considering the ActionTrip crowd's penchant for hating everything, Yahtzee's game 'reviews' should practically be gospel.
