With all of that in play, I started thinking there's no chance in hell this could be a bad game. Boy, was I wrong. Going through each of the three campaigns made me feel as if I was trying out some sort of a tech demo for each race. Seriously, while the unique abilities and weapons of each race have some charm, there's very little substance to it all. You'll be done with the Marine campaign in the blink of an eye. The frenetic ways of the alien are usually more frustrating than fun. Last but not least, the Predator - it just seems like a good gameplay recipe gone to waste. Tactics can be fun for a while, but the whole thing gets extremely repetitive very quickly. In all fairness, this is true of all three modes, mostly due to relatively uninteresting level design and generally short and pointless story modes.

All things considered, it's probably best you stick with the multiplayer. The cool blend of three capable and unique races, makes for some awesome combat and intense online matches. The classic Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch give you all the multiplayer goodness a FPS game needs, along with a nifty Survivor mode where you fend off swarms of oncoming Aliens. Some seriously exciting co-op shootouts can happen here. The Alien and Predator modes are also worth your time. The commendable thing is that the developers patiently worked on the multiplayer modes, successfully bringing out the most out of each race that's available to players.
As soon as you dig deeper into all three campaigns (Alien, Marine and Predator), the painful truth hits you. Completing every area essentially boils down to performing the bloodiest kill possible. It's never easy, I'll admit as much. The AI gives you a decent challenge in each of the story modes. Although carrying out a variety of gory finishing moves can be a lot of fun, the game fails to show any real depth and it's like you perform all of those aggressive moves with no purpose. The partial reason for that is a relatively weak story. The most you can expect from the narrative are scarce audio diaries from colonists and researches (oh god, not again). They're really crumbs adding up to a poorly written storyline (one we've seen in movies too many times before - be it Aliens, Predator or Alien vs. Predator).
Hardcore FPS gamers may find many hours of pure fun with the Aliens vs. Predator multiplayer mode. Should you decide to stick with solo play, I'm afraid you'll find little of real value. Perhaps toying around with the different abilities of all three characters can keep you occupied for a bit, but that's about all you get. It's a shame such an ambitious amalgamation of three different gameplay types doesn't amount into a coherent package with at least a bit more substance. Be warned; if you're out for an engrossing single-player experience, AvP falls short in almost every way. It also doesn't manage to recapture the addictive gameplay of its successful predecessors. So, expect an average shooter, at best.

ACTIONTRIP SCORE 6.1 Above Average Exploring the different aspects of each race is cool, you'll enjoy multiplayer and may even want to come back several times, the AI provides a good fight; There's little in the single-player to keep FPS fans engaged, gameplay mechanics are flawed somewhat, story is weak; RATINGS GUIDE |

Hopefully they just fucked up the console ports, like how they fucked over the PC port of Rogue Warrior.
Anyway, a fine review and a shitty game
Anyway, I still can't wait to play this, I enjoyed the demo after getting used to it, full is a must especially for those 20 euros it cost me.
It's not like there is plenty of Alien/Predator games to choose from, for a fan, anyway!
*smiley ad screams "Oh my god, no way!!"*
Geez, you now the FBI is watching you when the ads even say what you're thinking out loud... I'm just gonna back away now, no illegal things here, nothing...
*runs away*
After reading the game informer review the only thing I could get from it was, i suck at this game and it sucks I hate it therefore don't waste your time. Therefore proving that dumbass reviewer has no journalistic integrity. It was more of a troll post than a review. So piss on game informer.
However in your case, you acctually laid out all the pros and cons thoughtfully and intelligently and give a good description of what to expect. What you felt was weak points or strong points.
I have yet to play the single player but I did enjoy the MP demo. I won't be able to pick up my copy untill I am done with work. Also the AvP rebellion made back in 1999, the single player had hardly a shred of storyline. AvP 2 which was made by Monolith had an amazing story and their single player campaign was long and one of the most enjoyable gaming expieriences I have ever had. So I am dissapointed to hear that Rebellion did not learn from them.
It seems this game is all about the MP. Thanks for the honest review Vader.
maybe its your thing Vader, but it's not how it's done.
Suffice it to say that I (who, apparently is alone in this opinion/memory) do NOT remember the original AvP (Rebellion's first effort) being all that spectacular. I DO, however, remember Monolith's effort (AvP2) scaring the Papmers offa me in all the right ways...for many, many sleepless nights!
In fact all one needed to do to predict this outcome would be to look at the last decade's releases from each production company and compare:
Rebellion (scroll about halfway down): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rebellion_Developments
- the only thing I *vaguely* remember was that Vietnam: Shellshock game that got panned a couple years back.
Monolith: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monolith_Studios
- Hrm. NOLF1 & (to a lesser degree) NOLF2; FEAR series; AvP2; Tron 2.0; Condemned series
I shoulda known; but I still had hoped. Well, there IS multiplayer...and the hope for 3rd party mods, I suppose!
Fester
Sorry Vader, but i cannot trust your point of view on this one (being a 360 review)
despite it being quite a fair review.
Not surprised, but a little disappointed. I added to my list since I had hopes it could match up to the first 2 titles, at the least (I use that expression since I never enjoyed even those that much, but they were somewhat worthwhile).
Nah, I'll probably skip it. Heh. Wacked alien wall-hopping in confusing structures, less-than-adequately-stealthy predator (or overly alert marines) and a beeping radar that unnerves the heck out of me... okay, that was part of the fear factor, as frustrating as it was (since it wasn't all that helpful).
All these memories seem to be recalled in this latest title.
