» All About Aliens vs. Predator on ActionTrip

With all of that in play, I started thinking there's no chance in hell this could be a bad game. Boy, was I wrong. Going through each of the three campaigns made me feel as if I was trying out some sort of a tech demo for each race. Seriously, while the unique abilities and weapons of each race have some charm, there's very little substance to it all. You'll be done with the Marine campaign in the blink of an eye. The frenetic ways of the alien are usually more frustrating than fun. Last but not least, the Predator - it just seems like a good gameplay recipe gone to waste. Tactics can be fun for a while, but the whole thing gets extremely repetitive very quickly. In all fairness, this is true of all three modes, mostly due to relatively uninteresting level design and generally short and pointless story modes.

All things considered, it's probably best you stick with the multiplayer. The cool blend of three capable and unique races, makes for some awesome combat and intense online matches. The classic Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch give you all the multiplayer goodness a FPS game needs, along with a nifty Survivor mode where you fend off swarms of oncoming Aliens. Some seriously exciting co-op shootouts can happen here. The Alien and Predator modes are also worth your time. The commendable thing is that the developers patiently worked on the multiplayer modes, successfully bringing out the most out of each race that's available to players.

As soon as you dig deeper into all three campaigns (Alien, Marine and Predator), the painful truth hits you. Completing every area essentially boils down to performing the bloodiest kill possible. It's never easy, I'll admit as much. The AI gives you a decent challenge in each of the story modes. Although carrying out a variety of gory finishing moves can be a lot of fun, the game fails to show any real depth and it's like you perform all of those aggressive moves with no purpose. The partial reason for that is a relatively weak story. The most you can expect from the narrative are scarce audio diaries from colonists and researches (oh god, not again). They're really crumbs adding up to a poorly written storyline (one we've seen in movies too many times before - be it Aliens, Predator or Alien vs. Predator).

Hardcore FPS gamers may find many hours of pure fun with the Aliens vs. Predator multiplayer mode. Should you decide to stick with solo play, I'm afraid you'll find little of real value. Perhaps toying around with the different abilities of all three characters can keep you occupied for a bit, but that's about all you get. It's a shame such an ambitious amalgamation of three different gameplay types doesn't amount into a coherent package with at least a bit more substance. Be warned; if you're out for an engrossing single-player experience, AvP falls short in almost every way. It also doesn't manage to recapture the addictive gameplay of its successful predecessors. So, expect an average shooter, at best.

I haven't played it yet, but the review disappointed me, I had high hopes for this one.

un om bun [mail] Feb 16 2010, 08:05 am EST
I, for one, knew that it'll be mediocre at best.
mmacarthur: I had the same feeling in my bones :(
Ren3d [mail] Feb 16 2010, 08:22 am EST
Did not have any hopes for this. Tried the multiplayer demo....it was crap.
SpaceMonkey [mail] Feb 16 2010, 08:36 am EST
I thoroughly enjoyed the first game, especially as an alien, is the sequel really this bad?
DeviantSmacktar [mail] Feb 16 2010, 08:45 am EST
Being a purest for the first one this is disappointing, I heard the controls that were set up on the controllers were clunky and hard to handle. I have been reading reviews and watching vid reviews for the PC version, which includes DirectX11 and a keyboard and mouse :P Hopefully there is some saving grace with those features.

Hopefully they just fucked up the console ports, like how they fucked over the PC port of Rogue Warrior.
Bubu [mail] Feb 16 2010, 08:54 am EST
Ahahahaahahahahahahahaha.....hahaha.....ha......aaaa
Anyway, a fine review and a shitty game
Vader [STAFF] [mail] Feb 16 2010, 09:05 am EST
You could not have wrote that like a normal person?
Stinke [mail] Feb 16 2010, 09:05 am EST
These games are meant to be played on keyboard+mouse, you can play bowling and some shitty God of War games on consoles but that's it.
mmacarthur: Congratulations for being wrong, well done you!
Alchi [mail] Feb 16 2010, 09:52 am EST
Is PC version any better? I would think that keyboard + mouse is the way the god intended this game to be played. You know, the right way.
Supcic [mail] Feb 16 2010, 10:34 am EST
I figured as much from the demo. The atmosphere was there but the gameplay is severely lacking. Oh well, back to AvP2.
Paul [mail] Feb 16 2010, 10:50 am EST
And of course a fucking XBOX review.
Anyway, I still can't wait to play this, I enjoyed the demo after getting used to it, full is a must especially for those 20 euros it cost me.

It's not like there is plenty of Alien/Predator games to choose from, for a fan, anyway!
Vodoo [mail] Feb 16 2010, 10:56 am EST
what if the PC version is jellyfuckintastic ?
blitsie [mail] Feb 16 2010, 10:58 am EST
Oh my...

*smiley ad screams "Oh my god, no way!!"*

Geez, you now the FBI is watching you when the ads even say what you're thinking out loud... I'm just gonna back away now, no illegal things here, nothing...

*runs away*

Vader as a rabid AvP fanboy shockingly I am here to praise your review.

After reading the game informer review the only thing I could get from it was, i suck at this game and it sucks I hate it therefore don't waste your time. Therefore proving that dumbass reviewer has no journalistic integrity. It was more of a troll post than a review. So piss on game informer.

However in your case, you acctually laid out all the pros and cons thoughtfully and intelligently and give a good description of what to expect. What you felt was weak points or strong points.

I have yet to play the single player but I did enjoy the MP demo. I won't be able to pick up my copy untill I am done with work. Also the AvP rebellion made back in 1999, the single player had hardly a shred of storyline. AvP 2 which was made by Monolith had an amazing story and their single player campaign was long and one of the most enjoyable gaming expieriences I have ever had. So I am dissapointed to hear that Rebellion did not learn from them.

It seems this game is all about the MP. Thanks for the honest review Vader.

I gotta say, this is a real bummer for me, i had high hopes for this game
Superastic [mail] Feb 16 2010, 01:53 pm EST
Hmm, I require more PC reviews.
Tastysanchez [mail] Feb 16 2010, 03:01 pm EST
This should have been reviewed for PC. Xbox was bound to suck.
Sigma_100 [mail] Feb 16 2010, 04:00 pm EST
Damn, now that is a crying shame... I'm one of those who are wondering about how the PC version will pan out though.
WaBasHx [mail] Feb 16 2010, 05:41 pm EST
The game being on the PC doesn't magically make the level design better. I've played both versions and it seems that the game was designed with a controller in mind. It actually plays better on Xbox 360.
Killer Klown [mail] Feb 16 2010, 06:54 pm EST
I dunno, I've been playing the PC version for a while now - the controls are very crisp and responsive, and being able to remap the keys helps alot too; likewise, I'm not running into the crashes or bugs that some other sites have been mentioning were cropping up on the 360. Now, anyone who's seen me around here for a while knows that I don't particuliarly favor one system over another - if a game is good on PS3, I'll get it on PS3; if it's good on PC, I'll get it on PC. Or Xbox. Or Wii. Or Atari Fucking Twentysixhundred; in this case, I'd say the PC version - while nowhere near as good as AVP2 or even Primal Hunt - probably warrants another point on the Atrip scale up there. The gameplay for all three races is still kind of bleah (With Predators edging out in the lead for sheer brutality - shooting someones head off is cliche; biting someone's head off is kinda nasty; ripping out their skull and masturbating their spine is just... wrong on just the right levels) but the PC version seems to be lacking some of the technical flaws that I've seen reported on other versions. My one issue is that, for some reason, it supports DX9 and 11; but not 10.
tarang231994 [mail] Feb 16 2010, 07:06 pm EST
a game less too care abot amyways hope u will be reviewing Heavy Rain soon
Alchi: Vader doesn't have PS3. hate to break your dreams...
tarang231994: com on man at least he must be havin a ps3 phat
tarang231994 [mail] Feb 16 2010, 07:07 pm EST
actually a pc review would be better as AvP supports dx11 and the graphics would be better due to tessellation
Bubu [mail] Feb 16 2010, 08:37 pm EST
you can't make chocolate from shit ..... the game is still an average 7 on the PC
tarang231994 [mail] Feb 16 2010, 10:54 pm EST
but still graphically it is better on pc
Blurg [mail] Feb 16 2010, 10:59 pm EST
I'll have a look at the game nevertheless.
Hero [mail] Feb 17 2010, 04:59 am EST
reviewing a FPS on a console is like reviewing sex after sleeping with a teethless transvestite.

maybe its your thing Vader, but it's not how it's done.

Vodoo: *toothless* if you're gonna be cynical, do it right.
Vader: Teeth are important.
Cheddar [mail] Feb 17 2010, 05:17 am EST
I warned you all. There was plenty of reason to be very reserved in your expectations regarding this game, considering that the studio who made it just released one of the worst games of the last few years (Rogue Warrior) just a few months earlier.
FesterSilently [mail] Feb 17 2010, 01:47 pm EST
Yeah, I'm very letdown, if not entirely surprised. I could go into some long-winded diatribe (like I usually do!), but I just don't have it in me.

Suffice it to say that I (who, apparently is alone in this opinion/memory) do NOT remember the original AvP (Rebellion's first effort) being all that spectacular. I DO, however, remember Monolith's effort (AvP2) scaring the Papmers offa me in all the right ways...for many, many sleepless nights!

In fact all one needed to do to predict this outcome would be to look at the last decade's releases from each production company and compare:

Rebellion (scroll about halfway down): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rebellion_Developments

- the only thing I *vaguely* remember was that Vietnam: Shellshock game that got panned a couple years back.

Monolith: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monolith_Studios

- Hrm. NOLF1 & (to a lesser degree) NOLF2; FEAR series; AvP2; Tron 2.0; Condemned series

I shoulda known; but I still had hoped. Well, there IS multiplayer...and the hope for 3rd party mods, I suppose!

Fester
Killer Klown: The original AVP was good - not as good as AVP 2, but good. ...
FesterSilently: Oh, yeah! *I* remember that! And I, unfortunately, had...
DylanDeVille [mail] Feb 17 2010, 04:56 pm EST
I'm holding out.
Sorry Vader, but i cannot trust your point of view on this one (being a 360 review)
despite it being quite a fair review.
Vader [STAFF] [mail] Feb 18 2010, 12:27 am EST
Christ.
FesterSilently: Lol - yes: he disbelieves...for Christ! :D
Amok [mail] Feb 24 2010, 10:55 am EST
Added this title to my games-to-play list and not sure if I should remove it yet.
Not surprised, but a little disappointed. I added to my list since I had hopes it could match up to the first 2 titles, at the least (I use that expression since I never enjoyed even those that much, but they were somewhat worthwhile).

Nah, I'll probably skip it. Heh. Wacked alien wall-hopping in confusing structures, less-than-adequately-stealthy predator (or overly alert marines) and a beeping radar that unnerves the heck out of me... okay, that was part of the fear factor, as frustrating as it was (since it wasn't all that helpful).
All these memories seem to be recalled in this latest title.
