» All About Ninja Gaiden 2 on ActionTrip

There's a substantial amount of skills, scrolls, items and weapons (melee and ranged) to utilize throughout the game. Every weapon denotes a different fight style and unlocks an impressive number of combos. Which reminds me; thanks to the well-optimized controls, chaining various moves is generally straightforward and not that difficult to learn. Finishing off foes in a variety of ways quickly is extremely entertaining.

Ninja Gaiden 2 is a button-mashing fest, but one that gets increasingly fun if you stay with it, regardless of how difficult it gets sometimes. Simultaneously, it is a great challenge, most of all for newcomers. Now, you may not be the type of gamer that likes his games too challenging, but that's just what makes Ninja Gaiden 2 stand out. If you are a fan of the Ninja Gaiden series, you should definitely give it a go. Odds are you'll like it as much as the original.

Some may find the game unfair -- given the lousy camera angles and all -- rather than a challenge for one's gaming skills. Camera movement was a problem in the original and remains a serious issue in NG 2 and the fact that the developers still haven't resolved it is positively inexcusable. It's also the reason why we've lowered the score to some extent.

In the end, it's a matter of opinion. Of course, you can always try out the demo first, which is available on Xbox Live (for US and Canadian gamers - and now in Europe, as well).

As for me, I have thoroughly enjoyed it and I find it to be one of the most entertaining games I've ever played on the Xbox 360. Even casual gamers should try it. It makes a nice change from today's choice of generic shooters and action games.

The demo is also available in Europe.

I've already ordered my copy of Ninja Gaiden 2 and I've dusted off the gimp suit so I'm almost ready for some serious masochistic self-punishment ... now I just have to find out how to activate the Way of the Ninja Dog/Pussy which was the only way I managed to finish the original game.

Way of the Ninja Dog/Pussy, you say? Interesting.

"gets annoyingly difficult, even unfair at times"

Heh. Wouldn't be a proper Ninja Gaiden game if it were any other way.

Right now I'm playing through this game on the Path of the Warrior and I'm in chapter 6 and this game is challenging even for Ninja Gaiden veterans. Each fight (let alone boss fights) is a life and death situation, and this is a welcome change from other action games where enemy encounters are simply nuisances you must pass through. Good thing the devs implemented the health regeneration system in this game or else it would be near impossible...

I try to like this series, i really do, but i just don't enjoy dieing over and over and over because i am not some uber fighting game fan or because i haven't memorized moves and weapons stats so i know the best everything for each situation.

It just isn't fun IMO, and i play games for fun.
Vader [STAFF] [mail] Jun 10 2008, 03:11 pm EDT
Hm, not fun?

"Not fun" is certainly not the way I would describe this game. But like I said, there if you don't like your games too challenging, then I guess Ninja Gaiden 2 isn't the right choice.

Personally, I think it makes a nice refreshment and, unlike many other games I've reviewed recently, this one actually makes me want to play it after I've reviewed it.

This game is tough then after and hour you beat the boss there is such a tremendous feeling of actual achievement. I think the developers should be congratulated for no watering down the difficulty too much, like with Halo. The only downer for me is that the game does use cheap tricks to get you killed. For all those thinking its too hard pickup the original black edition ...

It's great to see that Team Ninja stayed true to themselves and kept this game as masochistic as possible. It's challenges like this that I feel have all but disappeared since the days of NES. Unfair at times....... yes. Frustrating......... yes. Incredibly satisfying after getting through...... HELL YES. Games like this definately have there place, I just wish there were more of them.

If there is anything I do have to complain about though, it's the camera. It really feels like Team Ninja took about 2 steps back when it came to its handling in this. It makes the game frustrating at times for all the wrong reasons.

I said it about the first NG, and I'll say it about this one - I don't find the game difficult at all; I find them cheap. I was raised on the original NES and arcade games; so 'difficult' gameplay is not an issue for me - I expect it. Most games these days are too easy, overall. With the recent Ninja Gaiden games, I've never had a single problem - to the point of getting through without dying once - in any area that I can actually see what's going on, however - and this was exemplified by the giant skeletal dragon fight in the first one, and (from what I've seen so far) the electric-train demon in the tunnels in this one: the developers appearantly do not have it in their power to make a difficult game, therefore they pull silly little tricks and fuck around with the camera angle so you can't see exactly where you're being attacked from or cannot line up your own attacks in retaliation. They're also inordinately fond of knock-around attacks, which only amplifies the problem.

My only criticism so far is that I managed to take down the werewolf boss in a few hits and he seemed very weak I was expectant of a kicking that never came.
