The first few hours of the Wolfenstein solo play were generally tedious. Let's be realistic. This is a FPS set against a WW II backdrop that also delves into the realms of the supernatural. Fun? Sure. Innovative? Well, hardly. In fact, most experienced gamers are bound to get bored really soon and just stop playing, simply because they've played this type of game way too many times before. On the other hand, Wolfenstein has a tendency to get increasingly engaging as you progress through the main campaign. The gameplay is well-balanced, appropriately mixing the typical FPS mayhem with elements such as exploration, weapon upgrading and the use of unique character abilities. Surprisingly enough, the single-player is reasonably lengthy, so it's likely you won't finish this game in one afternoon, which is often the case in modern-day shooters. Furthermore, it's been a while since we've had this much fun taking out bosses in a FPS.

However, we are compelled to end this review on a negative note. Although generally the game works and looks (and sounds) satisfactorily, id's Tech 4 engine is definitely showing its age in many instances. Characters look a bit rigid and some of the textures patterns are quite ugly. The story is downright dull and completely unimaginative... but hey, we're talking about Nazi super-solders, zombies, so who cares about the story anyway. Also, no matter how much time you've spent playing this game, it's impossible to shake off the feeling of FPS staleness. You'll find that it is an entertaining game altogether, albeit it quickly puts the player into familiar situations that have been dished out by many development studios in the past.
The noticeably well-conceived single-player, intense boss fights and a solid multiplayer keep this one in tact. Otherwise it's the usual action you can get from most FPS titles.

ACTIONTRIP SCORE 7.5 Good A solid, well-balanced, nice-looking shooter, with a lengthy single-player campaign and fun multiplayer; Hardly new and exciting, it's shooter you've played plenty of times before, graphics are a bit outdated. RATINGS GUIDE |
