One of the reasons why it took me so long to review this game (apart from having to play three other titles at the same time) was my determination to spend as much time as I could with the multiplayer. Well, it was worth it. The online multiplayer allows up to 32 players to compete in squads as they take part in various match types. You have 'Rush' where players defend or wipe out M-COM stations. The M-COM stations may be destroyed with explosive charges, with standard weapons or when a building collapses down on them (definitely my favorite). The 'Conquest' mode feels very much like the usual Capture-The-Flag multiplayer action, with the vehicles being as fun as in any previous Battlefield game. Players can also engage in the 'Squad Deathmatch' and 'Squad Rush' both of which proved to be as fun and as challenging as other modes. Thanks to the well-designed maps and the game's engine which provides plenty of destruction and freedom, odds are Battlefield: Bad Company 2 will attract any gamer who enjoys a decent first-person shooter.

![]() Ah, welcome to my summer house. |
Player classes are, of course, an integral part of the multiplayer experience. You can choose Assault, Engineer, Recon, and Medic. There's a choice of primary weapons, hand grenades and sidearms standard befitting each class. On top of that, the developers incorporated a welcomed customizable weapon selection menu, reminiscent to unlocks from Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 2142. The experience points gathered during the game will grant access to different weapons and gadgets. Each player may also spend some time customizing body armor, lightweight combat gear and such.
On my part, all the fun I generally expected from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 I basically got from playing this game. Bad Company 2 features all the delights I seek in a triple-A contemporary shooter. The story mode could still use some work and the writing felt a bit week (similarly to the previous game). Still, perhaps don't mind me, I'm just a nagging old bastard.
Despite an outstanding multiplayer ride, we still encountered problems - not to mention, the recent EA server issues, problems with lag and other technical mishaps. Mind you, all of that still won't stop you from recognizing what's probably one of the best shooters on the current PC and (from what I'm told) the console market.
![]() 9.0 Excellent A shooter you'll remember and want to play again. It effectively offers one of the best multiplayer experiences, in addition to a pretty solid single-player campaign, and the graphics are top-notch, accompanied by superb sound effects and a thrilling soundtrack; Various technical issues, which we hope will be resolved. P.S. I gave the game a 9 as well. Woulda earned a 10 from me if it would have had better joystick support, it regressed from previous Battlefield versions. How do you regress with something so basic?

There is no evolution at the core gameplay, same shity running and shooting since Unreal and Quake. I piss all over the graphics, sound and destructible environments and on every multiplayer like this one.
Developers should grow a fucking spine and build a multiplayer that requires the actual use of the brain.
Maybe the definition of FPS eludes you, it stands for a First Person Shooter, now unless an Indie company is making the game every FPS will be the same, always and forever, it costs way to much money and risk to be individual now a days.
Bring on the end of the day so I can go and play more.
I'm loving this game! SP is a pleasant surprise (considering the last battlefield game I played was 1942, which only had a skirmish like SP campaign) and has been way more fun that MW2. Seriously, the destructible environments and sound really make this game.
I started playing this when the beta was released on steam, and since then it's been hard not to annoy neighbours and housemates with the awesome sounds of this game. I get goosebumps everytime my character gets shell shocked with the volume on 11 =D
My only dislike about the game is that your squad mates have god mode on and. I'm playing this game on hard to get the most out of it, but find it really stupid that the rest of your team can seemingly take head shot upon head shot and not die. I really preferred the Brothers in Arms approach to this a lot more as it made the game far more challenging... but i guess it's a design choice I can easily live with =)
Overall: 9/10
Plus it looks fucken gorgeous.... and there's nothing quite like dieing by having a building fall on your head lol
BC2 is a solid title, the graphics are pretty damn good (though my PC can barely handle them), and the sound design is phenomenal, leaps and bounds better than the previous BF games. Also, I've elevated trolling to an art form with my use of the knife and smoke grenades.
Still, the game is buggy as hell, just like every single battlefield game that came before it, some of the problems I've encountered are so obvious I have a hard time believing they even tested the game.
The storyline in this sequel, on the other hand, doesn't quite measure up to my expectations. This time our friends seem to have become the go-to guys for unorthodox missions. How did that happen? Didn't they drive off into the sunset with a truckload of gold in the previous game? Also, there doesn't seem to be a clear motive throughout most of the game. You complete missions and are given new objectives as they come along, without much in the way of exposition or explanation.
The storyline only makes sense in hindsight, when you're in the thick of it, it's a difficult thing to make sense of.
Also, I objected to the copious use of invisible walls. Especially when you are finally presented with what seems like a good sandbox map (literally). It looks like you could drive cross-country across the whole thing from one objective to the other, like you'd expect, but half the sand-dunes are closed off by arbitrary invisible walls that I see NO reason for, whatsoever!
Also, the game seems to have lost that wonderful combat pacing that made the original so much fun. Combat requires a slower, more methodical approach this time around, no longer can you charge across a street, blow a hole in a wall, then charge through before the debris has even landed, gun blazing, into safe, blood-soaked cover. Everything about the game seems slower this time around. That's not a good thing. In the previous game, you were given the feeling that it was all about maintaining the momentum; charge - kill - blow something up - kill - charge, and so on. You were always moving.
This time around, you spend half your time sitting behind a wall, waiting for your limbs to grow back.
When we were given that health-syringe in the original, I though "yes, finally we're done with that ridiculous health-regeneration that Halo started". Seems I got got my hopes up too soon.
Also, the map layouts seem inferior in that that they appear smaller. The original successfully gave the illusion (yes, illusion; appearances matter in games, not facts) that you had a big wide world to happily romp around in. The sequel seems constrained, limited. More like a shooting-gallery than an actual battlefield.
Everywhere I go, this game receives top scores, some reviewers don't even mention the downsides of the game (of which there are a few), instead focusing solely on the things that would validate their expectations from before the launch.
To me, this game is a 7. Maybe a weak 7.5.
As for the multiplayer, it finally seems like the developers have realized that multiplayer is supposed to be a pleasant BONUS to an already good gaming experience. NOT the other way around.
For me, the most enjoyable multiplayer shooter on the net still remains TF2, but as of now, Bad Company 2 is a close runner-up.
